Comedy troupe to kick off the 2016-2017 Allied Arts season

Monday, August 22, 2016

Just in time to provide some comedic relief for the political season, the Capitol Steps comedy troupe will offer its special brand of humor at the Seretean Center Concert Hall in Stillwater on Friday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m.  As the campaigns heat up, come laugh at the political world and its inhabitants with this group of mostly congressional staffers turned comedians, presented by Oklahoma State University’s Allied Arts.

Crossing the country while satirizing the very people and places that once employed them, the Capitol Steps represent a total of 18 congressional offices and 62 years of U.S. House and U.S. Senate staff experiences.  Since its creation in 1981, the Capitol Steps have created song parodies and skits which convey a brand of satirical humor that represents both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish.

“Capitol Steps is the group that always gets the most requests for return trips to Stillwater and that’s why Allied Arts selects them to perform before every presidential election,” said Brandon Mitts, arts, culture and entertainment manager. “With so much tension this campaign season, it’s especially important for us to sit down and laugh together for an evening.”

The group has recorded more than 35 albums, including their latest, “What to Expect When You're Electing.” Featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, Capitol Steps can also be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their “Politics Takes a Holiday” radio specials.

Tickets for the performance are $15 for adults and $10 for OSU students and children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.okstate.edu or by phone at 405-744-7509. Tickets will also be available at the Seretean Center Concert Hall the evening of the performance beginning at 6:30. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The Capitol Steps performance is the first installment in the 2016-2017 OSU Allied Arts season, which includes a series of eight performances throughout the year. For decades, the OSU Allied Arts office has delivered top-notch talent to enrich the lives of OSU students and the local community through the arts.
