Thursday, September 3, 2015

OSU's Achafoa chapter of Mortar Board received the Gold Torch Award at the Mortar Board National Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. Courtney Wolfe, Achafoa chapter vice president (left) and Emily Martin, Achafoa chapter president, represented the chapter at the conference.

Oklahoma State University’s Achafoa chapter of Mortar Board received the Gold Torch award at the 2015 Mortar Board National Conference held July 31 through August 2 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Gold Torch award is presented to chapters that exemplify outstanding levels of scholarship, leadership and service. With more than 230 chapters nationwide, OSU was one of 36 chapters to receive the award.

Emily Martin, Mortar Board Achafoa chaptera president, said it is encouraging to see the chapter’s hard work pay off.

“We were honored to receive the Gold Torch award this year,” Martin said. “We have been incredibly blessed with a dedicated and high-achieving officer team, advisors and members to accomplish great success as a chapter.”

Mortar Board is a national honor society for college seniors who demonstrate high levels of scholarship, leadership and service. The national organization has nearly 250,000 members from 46 states, according to the Mortar Board website.

The Achafoa chapter was established at OSU in 1930 as a women’s honor society. Today, there are 58 members, both men and women. Each year, Mortar Board members select the top ten freshman men and women, create the Mortar Board calendar, participate in homecoming events, organize community service activities and award scholarships.
