OSU honors program highly rated in national publication

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Oklahoma State University’s honors program has been included among the top 25 highest rated in the latest edition of “Inside Honors: Ratings and Reviews of Sixty Public University Honors Programs,” which is set for release later this month.

“The Public University Honors group that publishes ‘Inside Honors’ is proving to be a credible analyst of honors programs throughout the country and we are pleased to be listed among those that meet its high standards,” said Dr. Keith Garbutt, dean, OSU Honors College.

OSU received a 4.5 out of 5 rating in the latest edition of “Inside Honors,” which uses unique data sets that include actual SAT and ACT averages for each program, actual high school rank and GPAs, and actual class size and course information that is based on an extremely detailed analysis of an individual program’s class offerings, according to publication editor John Willingham, who is also editor of publicuniversityhonors.com.

“We do not individually rank programs, but all of those listed (with 4.5 ratings) would be in a range of 11 through 22, including ties,” said Willingham. “Each year we select a somewhat different group of programs to review.”

The Public University Honors group has been publishing reviews of honors programs since 2012. The new 400-page edition of “Inside Honors” is expected to be available, at least in Kindle format, later this month.

Old Central serves as home to the Honors College at Oklahoma State University, which provides academically-talented students with a curriculum that is both challenging and broadening. Honors College classes, which are available across all disciplines, allow faculty and students to partner on a journey of intellectual discovery. Students complete the program and an undergraduate thesis before receiving an honors degree.

Garbutt said OSU Honors College students are exceptionally well prepared to go on to professional schools, graduate schools or into professional employment.
