Romans named College of Education Dean at Oklahoma State University

John S.C. Romans, Ph.D., has been named Dean for the Oklahoma State University College of Education. The appointment was approved today at the OSU/A&M Board of Regents Meeting and Romans will assume the role April 25. 

“Dr. Romans has had a distinguished career at Oklahoma State and we look forward to his leadership as the College of Education continues its excellence in teaching, research and outreach,” said Gary D. Sandefur, OSU Provost and Senior Vice President. 

Romans has been on the OSU faculty since 1990 and has extensive administrative experience within the College of Education. Most recently, he has been Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Administrative Support. 

Romans will also serve as OSU’s Director of Professional Education and continue his tenured appointment as Professor in the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology.

“I am honored to serve as dean of the College of Education and lead this very talented group of faculty, staff and students,” Romans said.  “We have the opportunity to tremendously impact the quality of education and health of our communities.”  

At Oklahoma State, Romans has previously served as Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Outreach and Research and as the Head of the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology. He also has experience as counseling area coordinator, associate school head and associate dean. 

A licensed psychologist in Oklahoma since 1991, Romans has supervised many students in school and community settings during his career. He has led interdisciplinary research teams to enhance university and community partnerships. His additional research interests include stalking and interpersonal violence, and evaluating college student counseling programs. 

Romans holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas, a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Iowa State University.
