Talent on Stage for an Unforgettable Experience

Thursday, January 28, 2016

Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton and Frank Fairfield

Iconic folk musicians, Frank Fairfield and Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, fiddled their way into the hearts of many after appearing on PBS’ three-part historical series “American Epic” this past fall. These men and their music embody a “cultural revolution that ultimately united a nation,” said Robert Redford, “American Epic” co-producer, when discussing his documentary on American folk music. Now, Fairfield and Paxton are strumming their way to Stillwater together to perform a special concert on Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall.

Both Fairfield and Paxton come to the stage with a very unique style, but together their partnership blossoms beautifully as they share their souls through music played in harmony.  Fairfield’s songs are comprised of instrumentals played with the fiddle, guitar and banjo and accompanied with his unique soulful voice.  He has a sly way of making old-time Appalachian tunes sound contemporary, which makes his performances engaging for all ages. While Paxton is a multi-instrumentalist as well playing banjo, guitar, harmonica, piano and also is a master on the fiddle.  He is a true songster performing everything from ragtime, hokum, old-time, French reels, blues and Appalachian mountain music.

Brandon Mitts, Arts, Culture and Entertainment manager, said the two young bards are the best this genre has seen in years.

“The audience will feel like they are sitting with a couple of friends on their back porch. These friends just happen to be fantastic multi-instrumentalists with soulful voices and an abundance of charm,” Mitts said.

Tickets for the performance are $22 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.okstate.edu or by phone at 405-744-7509. Tickets will also be available at the Seretean Center Concert Hall the evening of the performance beginning at 6:30. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The Blind Boy Paxton and Frank Fairfield performance is the fifth installment in the 2015-2016 OSU Allied Arts series.
