A team of four students in the masters in business analytics and data science program (MS BAnDS) in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University recently placed in the top three in the annual Humana-Mays Analytics Case Competition.

The team of Ranjith Kumar Kuppu Rathinam, Asif Syed, Landrie Alsobrook and Shubhi Gupta placed third out of 153 registered teams from over 45 different universities from around the country.

“I am delighted that one of our student teams reached the third spot in this grueling multiple-rounds competition,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, director of the MS BAnDS program. “As faculty all we can do is to motivate our students and encourage them to do their best. It is gratifying to see the sustained excellent performance of the many OSU teams through multiple rounds of this competition.”

Overall, 16 teams from OSU entered the competition. From those, 12 teams made the top 50 (24%), two teams made the top five (40%) and one team made the top three (33%). The success of all teams is unprecedented for Spears and OSU and the first time a team has placed in the top three in the competition.

The competition invites teams of two to four students from universities across the country to devise a solution to a real-world problem and then present their ideas throughout multiple rounds of material submissions, presentations and Q&As.

“I think a big part of our team’s success was all of the different skills and previous experiences that all of us had,” said Landrie Alsobrook, a member of the third-place team and MS BAnDS student. “We all had our strengths throughout all three rounds of the competition, which allowed all four of us to shine at different times. My team was amazing and I could not have done it without them.”
