More than $1.8 million awarded to OSU Center for Rural Health
The OSU Center for Health Sciences has received two federal grants totaling more than $1.8 million for the creation of an electronic health record network in northeastern Oklahoma and a telemedicine health care network in the Oklahoma Panhandle.  The Health Resources and Services Administration at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $1,593,961 to the center for the creation of the Northeastern Oklahoma Critical Access Hospital Electronic Health Record Network, which will allow hospitals and physician clinics in the region to share patient records electronically. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Distance Learning and Telemedicine Program awarded $246,410 for the creation of a rural telemedicine health care network in the Oklahoma Panhandle to provide specialty care and radiology services for patients by connecting to larger hospitals. In addition to the federal grant, OSU Center for Health Sciences is contributing an additional $246,412 in funding towards this project.
 
Senat honored for First Amendment activities
Associate journalism professor Joey Senat was presented the Marian Opala First Amendment Award at the state’s ninth annual First Amendment Congress held recently in Oklahoma City. The award is named for Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Marian Opala and honors individual efforts to uphold rights protected by the First Amendment. Past winners include state Attorney General Drew Edmondson and Sue Hale, executive editor of The Oklahoman.
 
OSU student places first in essay contest
For the third consecutive year, an OSU journalism student took first place in the college essay contest coinciding with the annual First Amendment Congress in Oklahoma City. Lindsey Rogers, a broadcast journalism senior from Edmond, received $300 for her essay on the First Amendment.
 
OSU Allied Arts to “jazz it up” Chicago style
OSU Allied Arts will present the Chicago Jazz Ensemble featuring Jon Faddis, Sunday, Nov.11, at 8 p.m. at the Seretean Center Concert Hall. Celebrated by critics and audiences alike as one of the nation’s foremost jazz bands, this ensemble comprises an elite group of Chicago jazz musicians. Campus marking Arts and Sciences Week
The OSU College of Arts and Sciences Student Council is celebrating Arts and Sciences Week Nov. 6-14 with several activities, including performances by the OSU Symphony Orchestra, the OSU Music Department and OSU Percussion Ensembles. The OSU Screen Studies Program will present the Exciterbulb film series screening of “Series 7: The Contenders” on Thursday, Nov. 8, and the OSU Art Department holds its reception for the Centennial Art Faculty Exhibition on Friday. Proposals for research funding invited
The deadline for this year’s Oklahoma Water Resources Research Institute grants competition has been extended to Nov. 19. This competition (contingent on funding being made available by the federal government) is expected to result in $50,000 funding ($25,000 match required) for each of three projects. CEAT Chili Cook-Off and Raffle set for Friday
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology will hold its annual Chili Cook-Off and Raffle this Friday, Nov. 9, to benefit the United Way. Entries for the cook-off must be in place by 10:30 a.m. with ribbons offered for best vegetarian, spicy, unusual ingredient, white meat, traditional and student entry. All you can eat lunch will be $5 in the ATRC, Vogt Room. Raffle tickets will be available in EN 101 ranging from $1 each to 15 tickets for $10. The Staff Advisory Council invites you to join in Harvest II food drive
The OSU Staff Advisory Council is inviting you to participate in Harvest II,  a community-wide food drive coordinated by the Stillwater Junior Service League. All food that is collected from the Staff Advisory Council/Harvest II food drive will be divided between different agencies, including Mission of Hope, Stillwater Domestic Violence, Payne County Youth Shelter, COCAA, Starting Point II, Southern Heights Love Feast, Salvation Army, Neighborhood Ministries of Perkins, Operation Christmas, and The Storehouse. All food needs to be delivered to the Chi-O Clock on Friday, Nov. 9, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. If you have an abundance of food and need assistance in delivering it to the clock, arrangements must be made no later than noon, Thursday, Nov. 8. New Coaches vs. Cancer T-Shirts
Show your support for Coach Sean Sutton and the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer campaign by purchasing the new Eskimo Joe’s limited edition Coaches vs. Cancer t-shirt.  The new 2007-2008 limited edition t-shirt is hot off the press and is now available in stores and online. View the t-shirt by clicking here . Currently, the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer campaign ranks first in the Big 12, first in the High Plains division and in the top ten nationally in dollars raised. Eskimo Joe’s has been a large part of the campaign’s continued success, donating over $80,000 to date.  Both the OSU C vs. C campaign and former coach Eddie Sutton have been nationally recognized with awards from the American Cancer Society in the last year. OSU’s Coaches vs. Cancer campaign has raised over $500,000 for the fight against cancer in the past four years.
 
Student-run ad agency attracting clients and attention
Student-run University Advertising is making progress with a growing clients list that includes OSU’s Student Government Association and The Roblan Companies. The campus agency, started by the OSU Ad Club in 2004, offers an array of design abilities including logo, business cards, brand image, and public relation services. It recently designed the logos used at SGA Homecoming Tailgate and will soon present former OSU football star R.W. McQuarters with a choice of logos to identify “The Roblan Companies,” his real estate development company. Aside from offering great work, University Advertising also provides students with valuable experience. Angel Tree project to start soon
The Non-Traditional Student Organization is preparing to kick off its annual Angel Tree project on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in the Student Union. The project gives OSU faculty, staff and students a chance to supply needy youngsters with gifts for Christmas. This year, those who take Angels from the tree will be asked for a phone number or e-mail contact and the numbers on the Angels they take so they can be contacted and reminded if the Angles are not returned. There will be a tag attached to each Angel with instructions on how to fill it out and put it in the box provided. Burnin’ Black Gospel Choir will be at the kick off to sing and Pistol Pete will be on hand to meet and greet. Everyone is invited to attend, have a cookie and get their Angels. 
 
Flu shots available this week
The Seretean Wellness Center has received a limited supply of flu shots.  The staff will be on campus the following days and times to provide flu shots to OSU faculty and staff:.
Wednesday, Nov. 7, Willard Living Room, 10 a.m. – noon
Thursday, Nov. 8, Physical Plant, 101J Physical Plant Building, 1 – 3 p.m.
Shots will be given on a first come, first serve basis only and the cost of the flu shot is $15.  If you have HealthChoice Insurance, the $15 will be billed to your insurance. You must bring a copy of your insurance card.  If you do not have HealthChoice, the $15 is payable in cash or check only (correct change is appreciated). The new Energy Education Program adds informational Web site
The OSU Energy Education Program is a people-based energy management program that promotes conservation of electricity, gas and water on each of the OSU campuses by identifying and creating awareness of opportunities for energy savings and streamlining usage during unoccupied times. Employees can enroll in or make changes to health care, dental, vision and flexible benefits during this annual enrollment period. You’re invited to seriously consider BlueCross coverage for yourself and eligible dependents since there is no pre-existing condition clause during this special enrollment period, regardless of coverage or lack of coverage in 2007. Veterinarian to speak about back pain in dogs tonight
Dr. Kristy Broaddus will talk about back problems in dogs at the Community Pet Care Seminar, sponsored by Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 6) from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The seminar will take place in McElroy Hall, which is located at the corner of McFarland and Farm Road on the Stillwater campus. Broaddus’ talk will include information on how dogs injure themselves, the surgery to repair the damage, and the prophylactic laser disk ablation process. Pet Care Seminars are open to the public. Complimentary parking, admission and light refreshments are provided. Honor society induction ceremony set
The Phi Beta Delta Epsilon Upsilon Chapter Honor Society for International Scholars will hold an induction ceremony Nov. 14 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. at 108 Wes Watkins Center. A reception will follow. The keynote address “Making a World of Difference, One Student at a Time,” will be presented by Dr. Patricia Rayas Duarte, professor, biochemistry and molecular biology with the OSU Food and Agricultural Products Center. Interim OSU System CEO and President Marlene Strathe will make the presentation of the honors medallions.
 
Mr. and Ms. International Pageant ahead
The International Student Organization will present the Mr. and Ms. International Pageant on Nov. 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. The scholarship pageant is an opportunity for international students to showcase their beauty, talent and culture. Come and enjoy performances of OSU’s most talented international students. Share The WEALTH is sponsoring WEALTH WEEK November 6-9th.  The Share The WEALTH peer health educators (students helping students) have been providing free health information on various topics on campus this week. On Thursday, Nov. 8, help yourself at the “Stress Management Booth” at the Student Union from 1-3 p.m. Thursday evening there will also be a dog walking event at Boomer Lake beginning at 6 p.m. at the pier!  Stop by any of the booths and pick up some helpful health information, as well as take your dog for a walk! Club-level seats available to help United Way and The Chicken
Two club-level seats at Boone Pickens Stadium could be yours for the OSU vs. Kansas game if you’re the winner in an upcoming drawing that will benefit the OSU drive for Stillwater’s United Way. The drawing for the seats will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. Tickets for the drawing are just $2 each, three for $5 or six for $10. Reportedly, the amount collected could be a consideration in current deliberations to free “The Chicken” after his recent untimely arrest (click here ). The OSU Lahoma Club presents “What’s in Fashion – circa 1907?”
Help celebrate Oklahoma’s 100th birthday at the next meeting of the OSU Lahoma Club, which will feature a 1907 Clothing Style Show and luncheon Monday, Nov. 12, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meditations, located on Country Club Road west of Stillwater. Help yourself and others avoid food-borne illness, consider the following safe food handling rules: 1. Wash your hands before and after eating; 2. Separate raw meats and eggs from ready to eat foods; 3. Cook foods to the proper temperatures to destroy bacteria; 4. Refrigerate and defrost foods properly; and 5.
