A comprehensive energy conservation initiative expected to save more than $22 million over the next seven years is well under way throughout the Oklahoma State University System. Many building environmental systems already have been adjusted to limit consumption, and the next implementation stages of the program developed in partnership with Energy Education Inc. will ask all faculty, staff and students for action. “EEI’s program in no way requires us to compromise the university’s research and education mission. We will not limit laboratory operations or disrupt essential activities,” said Interim OSU System CEO and President Marlene Strathe. “Most of the changes, such as establishing building heating and cooling schedules according to seasons and times of occupancy, will go largely unnoticed.” The program, including standardized best practices and guidelines that promote responsible energy management, is designed to limit utility energy consumption primarily when buildings and spaces are unoccupied. ExxonMobil Corporation gives OSU unrestricted $45,000 grant
ExxonMobil Corporation announced today that Oklahoma State University will be one of 84 colleges and universities throughout the country to receive an unrestricted grant of $45,000. The grant represents a portion of the total $1.7 million being contributed nationwide to support various academic programs that help prepare students to enter the workforce. Because it is unrestricted the grant allows selected academic departments to allocate the money for various educational purposes including scholarships, field trips, visiting speakers, equipment purchases, student and faculty travel to academic-related activities, and other educational projects. “We are extremely grateful for this gift, which will help us continue our pursuit of academic excellence at Oklahoma State University. As part of a Global Briefing series, Middle East expert and author Lt. Col. R. Alan King will speak on “Iraq: The Past, The Present, and The Way Ahead,” On Thursday, Oct. 11. at 2 p.m. in the Wes Watkins Center Auditorium. King served 16 months in Iraq with the U.S. Army, first as a Civil Affairs battalion commander, then later as a deputy director of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad. King was the top civil-military adviser in Baghdad when the previous Iraqi regime fell. In September 2006, he published his first book, “Twice Armed: An American Soldier’s Battle for Hearts and Minds.” A reception and book signing will follow. The Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence coordinates the OSU Regents Professors’ Mentoring program, which identifies senior faculty who are recognized as national leaders in their respective fields and invites them to share their wisdom with early and mid-career faculty. The goal of the program is to help assistant professors and mid-career faculty enhance professional academic skills such as understanding the values and norms as well as the paths to succeed in academia. The mentoring program also targets those who intend to advance their career by becoming academic journal editors, seeking grants, or getting a chaired position. ITLE works in cooperation with the Chair of the Regents Professors Dr. John Mowen and the Chair of Faculty Council Dr. Bob Miller on the program. Student Affairs Cook-Off Challenge tomorrow for United Way
The 13th Annual Student Affairs Cook-Off Challenge benefiting the Stillwater Area United Way will be held tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 5) from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. This event is open to the public and it’s only $5 for all you can eat. Those who plan to cook can compete in one or all five categories : chili – stews/soup – salad/vegetable – salsa – bread – dessert. There will also be a silent auction! Come and bid on your favorite item. Entries for the Cook-Off Challenge and Silent Auction items need to be submitted by 10 a.m. Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. The awards will be given at 12:30 p.m.
OSU veterinarian recognized for service
Dr. Kenneth Bartels, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Oklahoma State University, recently received the 2007 Visionary of the Year Award at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium held in Fort Worth, Texas. The award honors a person who is actively engaged in private, public or corporate practice of veterinary medicine and is recognized by their profession. Bartels is the McCasland Professor of Laser Surgery, Cohn Chair in Veterinary Medicine, Director of the Sarkeys Surgical Laser Laboratory and Colonel, Veterinary Corps, U.S. Army Reserve. Through memberships and positions held in various organizations too numerous to list, he has elevated the standards and goals of veterinary medicine. Bartels is also active in civic organizations contributing to the Stillwater community for many years. He is currently on active duty stationed at Ft. Gordon in Georgia. For more, click here .
Director of Crazy Horse Memorial to speak at OSU-Stillwater, music also featured
Donovin Sprague, director of education at the Crazy Horse Memorial, will give a lecture about preserving Native American culture in contemporary times, which will be followed by a musical performance on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5 – 7 p.m. in the French Lounge at OSU-Stillwater. Blues guitarist and vocalist Brandon Sprague will perform. Donovin, a descendant of Chief Hump and family descendant of Chief Crazy Horse, will draw from his extensive knowledge of Lakota history, as well as from his own experience as a lecturer at Black Hills State University and Oglala Lakota College. He is the author of five books, including his latest, “The Choctaw Nation,” and is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux. Sprague’s visit is sponsored by the Native American Faculty and Staff Association, Professor Ai Ogawa and the English Department.
New OSU aquatic entomology course gives insights into ecological health
Two Oklahoma State University faculty members have joined forces to offer a new course in aquatic entomology that examines the vital interrelationship between water and land ecosystems—especially important in Oklahoma, which has more coastline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined. Instructors Carmen Greenwood and Joe Bidwell don’t do boring; instead they’re offering an up-close and personal look at the life sciences designed to challenge both undergraduate and graduate students. Students interested in fisheries, water resources, environmental sciences, biology, zoology and similar career fields can benefit. Business series to include golf, Vicente Fox and strengths training
“The Worldwide Business Opportunity of Golf” will kick off this year’s series of Tulsa Business Forums, which will also include former Mexican President Vicente Fox and business guru Marcus Buckingham. The series, hosted by the Oklahoma State University William S. Spears School of Business, will start with CEO Wally Uihlein whose company Acushnet is the parent company to the Titleist, Cobra, and FootJoy golf brands. His luncheon presentation is set for Thursday, Oct. 18, from noon – 1:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Tulsa. Former Coca-Cola executive and Mexican President Vicente Fox will speak on “Bringing the New Economy to Latin America” on Feb. 5 from 4-5:30 p.m. and Marcus Buckingham, author of three international business bestsellers, will round out the forum series with his latest command: “Go Put Your Strengths to Work!” on March 28 from 2:30 – 5 p.m. Fox and Buckingham will make similar appearances in Oklahoma City for the annual Executive Management Briefings there. Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research conference this month
The Office of University Research Compliance in cooperation with Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research is pleased to present a one day conference, “Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research Institutional Review Board 101” on Wednesday, Oct. 24th, in the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center on the OSU-Stillwater campus. Lahoma Club to hear about archaeological site
Dr. Stephen Perkins will talk about the ongoing archaeological excavations of an 18th century Wichita Indian village at the Bryson-Paddock Site located near Newkirk, Okla., at a luncheon meeting of the Lahoma Club on Monday, Oct. 8, in the OSU Student Union, room 211 Oklahoma Room, starting at 11:45 a.m. The luncheon program begins at 11:45 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. The cost to attend is $10.25 per person, paid in advance. Lahoma is open to women who work at Oklahoma State University/OSU Foundation or whose spouse works at either entity. OSU/Oracle Technology Day
Oklahoma State and Oracle are hosting a Technology Day, "Putting the Oracle Technology Stack to Work at Oklahoma State University," on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 10:30 a.m.-5:15 p.m. in the Student Union Sequoyah Room (Room 280). Representatives from Oracle, a software company that sells software packages (including Oracle Database, Oracle Application Server, etc.), will be on hand to give an in-depth overview and answer questions about what Oracle has to offer. “Moon Over Buffalo” starts next Wednesday
The Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre will open its fall season with the comedy farce Moon Over Buffalo, running from Oct. 10 to the 14 for a total of five performances at the Vivia Locke Theater in The Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. The show will be dedicated to one of the university’s most honored alumni, the late M.B. Seretean. The plot is full of misunderstandings, misplaced affections, missing persons and a rapid fire assault of jokes. The lead roles of George and Charlotte Hay will be played by actual husband and wife Nathan Gwartney and Carrie Clevenger-Gwartney. Veteran professor of theatre B. Peter Westerhoff will be directing the madcap mayhem after returning from a year long sabbatical. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for general admission and can be purchased at the OSU Theatre Box Office Monday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m. or by calling (405) 744-9208. Performances are 7:30 nightly from Oct. 10-13 with a 2:30 matinee on Oct. 14.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month
A group of journalism students from the PR Management and Strategies class will be collecting donations of toiletries, towels, blankets, pillows, gift cards, children's toys, etc…this month for the Stillwater Domestic violence Center. Donations can be dropped off at one of several boxes located throughout the journalism building in classrooms and the main office. It’s a fact that every nine seconds in the U.S. a man beats a woman. OSU “Ride for the Brand” Ranch Rodeo set for Saturday
The OSU “Ride for the Brand” Ranch Rodeo will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at the OSU Rodeo Arena at the corner of Lakeview and Western. Watch working ranch cowboys compete for honors to raise funds for the OSU Cowboys and Cowgirls Rodeo Team travel. There will be chuck wagon races followed by a ranch rodeo. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the chuck wagon races starting at 5:30 p.m. and ranch rodeo starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 and children 6-years-old and under are admitted for free. Also, anyone who is in the military or a first responder will be the teams’guest at the ranch rodeo. Students interested in participating in the 2008 Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition may find this workshop helpful. Information about the competition will be discussed and the workshop will provide essential information on topics that will assist in navigating the technology commercialization process and writing successful business plans. Students host event for service learning project
OSU physical education seniors will host the Sectional NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick competition at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 13. The competition is open to winners from the local competitions across the northern half of Oklahoma. Organizing and hosting the event is a service learning project for students in Administration and Program Design in Physical Education and Athletics, which is taught by Dr. Patricia Hughes. Winners at the Sectional competition will advance to the Team competition in Dallas in November.

First tobacco industry whistleblower to offer company secrets
Recruited to develop a safer cigarette for the Philip Morris Company, Dr. Victor DeNoble discovered some startling truths about the tobacco industry, which he plans to share Wednesday, Oct. 17, from noon – 1 p.m. at the ConocoPhillips Alumni Center in Stillwater. Join the first tobacco industry “whistleblower” as he exposes what he calls the “truths, lies and addictions” related to the industry. DeNoble will discuss tobacco industry tactics for gaining new clients and how, through the use of the product, the industry makes sure those clients keep coming back for more. He’ll share the same information that led the company to seize his lab and fire him only to learn that he had become a key witness in the federal government’s case against the industry. Mark your calendars now to participate in the 12th Annual OSU Black Alumni Golf Tournament Friday, Oct. 19, at the Cimarron Trails Golf Club in Perkins. The Black Alumni Reunion and OSU Homecoming will be held the next day. The early bird fee for the tournament is $85 per person or $340 per team and the deadline is Friday, Oct. 5. ECO-Film project screening “Baraka”
The ECO-Film Project, sponsored by ECO-OSU, will present the film “Baraka” on Thursday, Oct. 11, room 101 Classroom Building at 7:30 p.m. Baraka is an incredible journey through six continents and 24 countries. It has no plot, contains no actors, no script and was painstakingly shot on 70mm film. It is a collection of high quality images, presented in a moving and compelling manner. “Baraka” is an ancient Sufi word, which can be translated as “a blessing, or as the breath, or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds.” For many people Baraka is the definitive film in this style. Breathtaking shots from around the world show the beauty and destruction of nature and humans, coupled with an incredible soundtrack including on-site recordings of the monks of Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery.
