Meet local authors on Saturday

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Frankie Tousley and Emily States hold books written by local authors..

The Stillwater Public Library, in partnership with the Stillwater Writers, New Forums Press and The RoadRunner Press, is hosting the “READ LOCAL” authors fair on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1-4 p.m.  Published local authors are invited to promote and sell their books at the fair which will be held at the public library.

“Over the last year, the library has been encouraging local community members to write,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.  “The fair is intended to introduce the community to those who have taken up the pen, but it is also intended to support our literary community by giving the authors a forum for selling books.”

The fair will feature published writers from Stillwater, Payne County and those who have a connection anywhere within the fifty miles surrounding Stillwater, including Perry, Pawnee, Ponca City and Guthrie.  Authors who have an OSU connection are also invited to participate.

Interested authors can register on the Stillwater Public Library website at http://library.stillwater.org/read_local_authors_fair.php.

Participation as an author is free with the donation of two of the author’s books, otherwise a $25 fee is applied.  One copy of the book will be archived in the library’s Special Collections and the second copy will be used as a giveaway at library programs.

Each author will be provided a table for booth space, where they can sell books and visit with participants.

“We’re hoping that community members will take the time to chat and learn about our authors,” said Reynolds.  “Hopefully, they will share a cup of coffee together and pick up some good books.”

Participation by the public is free.

At 2 p.m., writer/illustrator Tim Jessell will present a session on his work illustrating popular children’s books.  Jessell, one of Stillwater’s most successful literary figures, is the author of the book “Falcon” and the illustrator for many popular children’s series, such as Stat by New York Knicks all-star Amar’e Stoudemire, The Secrets of Droon by Tony Abbott and Dog Diaries by Kate Klimo.

Other fair activities include five minute readings by participating authors, a complementary coffee bar provided by The RoadRunner Press and illustrating activities for children.  Door prizes will be given away at the end of the fair, and eligibility will be based on visiting authors’ booths.

READ LOCAL is being coordinated with The Red Dirt Film Festival which runs Oct. 25-26.  For more information about the film festival, visit its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RedDirtInternationalFilmFestival.
