President’s Masterworks Concert to feature opera star Leona Mitchell
The 2014 OSU President’s Masterworks Concert will feature former Metropolitan Opera Star Leona Mitchell, along with faculty, students and orchestra, performing works from Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi for performances on Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 9. at 2:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.
The Grammy-Award winning Mitchell, who sang for 18 seasons at the Met, will join the Concert Chorale, University Singers and Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Drs. Eric Garcia and Z. Randall Stroope, to perform Libera me from Verdi’s Requiem; Va pensiero from Nabucco, and Triumphal March and Final from Aida. She will also perform Son guinta from La Forza del Destino.
OSU voice faculty including Dr. Anne-Marie Condacse, April Golliver and Steven Sanders will perform selections from La Traviata, Il Travatore, and Macbeth, before joining in a selection from La Traviata.
Verdi is known for operas that have been so widely performed over the years that their music has become part of popular culture. During his lifetime (1813-1901) his works dominated the Italian opera scene and he was considered a preeminent opera composer of the 19th Century.
Concert tickets are available in the Music Office, 132 Seretean Center. The price is $10 for reserved seating and $7 for student reserved seating. Tickets will also go on sale at the box office one hour before each concert. For more information, contact Holli Stevens at (405) 744-8998.
