Oklahoma State University graduate student Ali Asmari won second place in the regional Three Minute Thesis® competition held recently at the annual Conference of Southern Graduate Schools in San Antonio.
Asmari, a doctoral student in mechanical and aerospace engineering, competed against 14 other state winners from universities in the region to earn the $500 runner-up prize for his presentation on recycling fossil fuel pollutants for use in stabilizing and strengthening concrete.
The Three Minute Thesis challenges master’s and doctoral students to present a compelling talk on their thesis/dissertation topic and its significance in three minutes or less. Judging criteria is centered on communication style, comprehension and engagement.
Asmari, from Iran, won a similar contest last summer, sponsored by the OSU Graduate College, qualifying him to advance to the regional competition. His talk was recently featured as a TEDx OStateU presentation.
Asmari’s doctoral work includes specializations in automation and computer vision. He currently works as a mechanical engineering intern with the New Product Development Center at OSU. Ali writes computer code and designs mechanical parts, electrical circuits and controllers. He consults with clients to determine their project requirements and possible approaches.
