OSU named a Bicycle Friendly University
Wednesday, October 22, 2014
The League of American Bicyclists recognized Oklahoma State University today with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly University (BFU℠) award, making it one of 33 visionary colleges and universities, across the country, that are transforming their campuses and communities.
“Campus leaders are recognizing the real-time and long-term impact that a culture of bicycling can create,” said Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists. “We applaud this new round of colleges and universities for investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their staff, students and surrounding communities.”
OSU’s designation as a bicycle friendly campus indicates its value for bicycles as a legitimate form of transportation on campus and in the community. The university encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as OrangeRide, a bicycle rental program, offered to the campus and community through OSU Parking and Transit Services. In addition, the rental shop also provides basic bicycle repair for personally-owned bicycles.
“Personally, bicycling has become incredibly important to my mental and emotional health,” said Keith Reed, extension educator. “It serves as my life reset button.”
The award also means that OSU will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the league to become even more bicycle-friendly.
“Cycling is great for overall wellness physically, socially and emotionally,” said Suzy Harrington, OSU’s chief wellness officer. “Cycling encourages being outside, breathing in fresh air and feeling the sunshine. It also is a social event and brings a smile to those around.”
