Percussion ensembles to offer the up-beat to the unusual…
The Oklahoma State University Percussion Ensembles will present their first concert
of the spring semester on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center for
the Performing Arts Concert Hall.
The concert will open with two very up-beat and groove-centered works “Septet” by
Daniel Levitan, written for all drum instruments, and “Marubatoo” by John Wyre for
all keyboard percussion instruments. Next, a classic percussion work by noted composer
John Cage entitled “Third Construction” will feature four percussionists playing very
unusual instruments including 20 tin cans, rattles, cricket callers, log drums and
a solo conch shell.
The ensemble changes mood with a beautiful adaptation for marimbas transcribed by
OSU Alum Kyle Enevoldsen from the Dimitri Shostakovich “String Quartet No. 8” composed
in 1960. The concert will close with a wild and driving quartet by European composer
Istvan Marta entitled “Doll’s House Story” which will feature Japanese drums and pitched
gongs from Thailand.
The OSU Percussion Ensembles are under the direction of Wayne Bovenschen and Stuart
Langsam.
Admission to the concert is $8 for adults/$6 for students and senior citizens. All proceeds benefit the OSU Department of Music. For more information, call 405-744-6133 (Events Line, Ext. 1).
