Visiting artist to unveil unusual multimedia works
Visiting artist Jorge Bachman will unveil an independent sound installation he has created by using the recordings gathered by a late Oklahoma State University art professor on Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Postal Plaza Gallery in Stillwater.
A Swiss-Colombian artist who collects recordings exploring the sounds of everyday life, Bachman’s sound installations combine found and created sounds with instrumental performance in unconventional environments.
He has been working with the sound recordings of the late Dale McKinney, a former
associate professor of art at OSU, who was also a respected painter, printmaker, and
sculptor. The reel-to-reel audio tape recordings are part of the university’s archive
material held by the Department of Art, Art History, and Graphic Design. Bachman has
used McKinney’s recordings to create a site-specific multimedia piece for the Postal
Plaza Gallery. Once unveiled, it will remain open for the rest of the semester alongside
McKinney’s own kinetic sculptures, currently on view in “Sharing a Journey,” the
OSU Museum of Art’s inaugural exhibition.
In addition to the work he will unveil on Thursday, four OSU students are collaborating with Bachman to create an exhibition in Hanner Hall on campus, which uses found sounds to create an experience representing the spectrum of emotions from despair to hope. Visitors will explore a labyrinth-like installation, moving from room to room and encountering various sounds that students have collected and edited throughout the semester.
The Hanner exhibit, “Fading Open: The Mind Recovers in Silence” will open to the public on April 21 through April 25 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and April 26 and April 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition to this new work, an existing piece by Bachman is being featured in the Postal Plaza Gallery throughout the duration of his visit to Stillwater through April 25. This offers visitors an opportunity to experience the artist’s work before the other pieces are revealed.
