Las Cafeteras

Allied Arts is excited to kick-off its 2015-16 series with the vibrant, musically-talented Latino group, Las Cafeteras on Friday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall. Las Cafeteras creates a Latin American musical fusion with a unique East LA sound with inspiring, community-focused political lyrics.

Brandon Mitts, Arts, Culture, and Entertainment manager, is excited about this season’s opener. “Las Cafeteras is exploding in popularity. I believe it is because of the infectious nature of their live performances,” said Mitts. “I saw them perform in Seattle and by the end of the concert everyone was in the aisles dancing. The people who attend the event at OSU will leave uplifted.”

The musicians of Las Cafeteras formed their friendship in the mid-2000s at El Sereno’s Eastside Café while attending a series of free classes about the Mexican tradition of son jarocho. From there, the young group molded its sound by experimenting with other expressions such as hip-hop, Native American music and cumbia rhythms, which led them to create a very eclectic sound that knows no borders. The band has seen many successes in their genre, including the opportunity to perform “La Bamba Rebelde” with Los Lobos, the legendary musicians who popularized the son jarocho genere’s most well-known song.

Tickets for the performance are $22 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.okstate.edu or by phone at 405-744-7509. Tickets will also be available at the Seretean Center Concert Hall the evening of the performance beginning at 6:30. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Las Cafeteras is the first performance of the 2015-2016 OSU Allied Arts series. For decades the OSU Allied Arts office has brought top-notch talent to the Oklahoma State University campus. The Allied Arts office seeks to enrich the lives of students through the arts. Allied Arts hosts six performances during the year.
