Friday, November 13, 2015

The Oklahoma State University Service-Learning Volunteer Center partnered with three in-state universities and Oklahoma Campus Compact to present the Eighth Annual Oklahoma Service-Learning Conference held at OSU-OKC..

The conference, sponsored by Langston University in collaboration with Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma, educates faculty from varied disciplines on the value of service-learning in higher education for students and the communities served. This year’s conference theme was “An Education of Service for a Life of Community Engagement” and included best practices in service-learning research as well as sustainable community partnership discussions.

“The annual Oklahoma Service-Learning Conference is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to meet diverse practitioners and community partners,” said Joyce Montgomery, Service-Learning Volunteer Center coordinator. “Research presentations offered a view of applied knowledge providing solutions in meeting common areas of need in communities across the state.”

Nada Abd Elhadi, Khaizer Omar, Katelyn Thomas and Michael Thomas, all OSU graduate students, attended the conference as well as Joyce Montgomery, OSU Service-Learning Volunteer Center coordinator. Elhadi and Katelyn Thomas presented a poster session on Teaching English Language to Internationals through a cultural competency framework and Michael Thomas and Montgomery presented a poster session on MICAH Mentors as an intergenerational program.

Since its inception in 1984, the Service-Learning Volunteer Center has promoted leadership for Oklahoma State University students by offering interactive and meaningful service-learning activities, providing research opportunities and connecting with society to promote the general welfare of its citizens.
