The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) named Dr. Estella Atekwana, regent’s professor and head of the Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University, as a recipient of its Outstanding Educator Award. 

“I am truly honored to be selected for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Outstanding Educator award and I am grateful and humbled to be this year’s recipient,” Atekwana said.  “Mentoring students has been a passion of mine over the last 25 years and it is highly gratifying to know that I have made a positive impact on the lives of many students.”

Atekwana arrived at OSU in 2006 as the Sun Company Clyde Wheeler Endowed Chair Professor.  She served as the school’s graduate director for seven years before taking over as head of the school in 2013.  She has earned numerous teaching awards at OSU and has served in many leadership roles, both nationally and internationally.  

In a prepared statement, the SEG commented, “In the opinion of the SEG Honors and Awards Committee, Atekwana’s mentorship skills in the field have resulted in a professional, nurturing relationship with her students.”

The SEG, the international society of applied geophysics, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the science of geophysics and the education of applied geophysicists. Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma and established in 1930, SEG connects the world of applied geophysics. The society fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, educational opportunities, and multiple website resources.  They will honor Atekwana, as well as award winners in other categories, at the SEG International Exposition and Annual Meeting, October 16-21, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. 

Though unrelated to the above award, Atekwana was also recently elected as a Fellow of The Geological Society of America (GSA).  She will be recognized for this honor at the GSA Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, September 25.
