OSU Museum of Art presents "Oklahoma & Beyond", Highlighting Collection of Tulsa's George R. Kravis II

The Oklahoma State University Museum of Art is pleased to introduce Oklahoma & Beyond: Selections from the George R. Kravis II Collection from Feb. 28 through June 21, 2017.

During the past several decades, Tulsa art collector George R. Kravis II has amassed a nationally renowned collection of industrial design and contemporary fine art. While his design collection is known across the nation, his fine art collection has rarely been seen.

However, selections from his fine art collection are the primary focus of Oklahoma & Beyond, complemented by examples of furniture and other industrial design. The exhibition showcases more than 40 objects by significant artists and designers including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Otto Duecker, Frank Gehry, Robert Cottingham, Joseph Glasco, Phillippe Starck, Paul Jenkins, Wade Guton, Ettore Sottsass, and Brian Bress.

Accompanying the artworks are stories about Kravis’s journey as a collector, including his accounts of how he found artworks and made the decision to acquire them, his dream acquisition, and meeting the industrial design specialist who now serves as Kravis’s consultant. Alongside these tales, museum visitors will also find information about the individual works of art and design, which range from Pop Art to Hyperrealism to contemporary British painting to video art and beyond.

Objects from the Kravis collection have been displayed in some of the country’s most prominent museums and galleries, including Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York City), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and more.

Oklahoma & Beyond offers a compelling demonstration of a community-minded Oklahoma citizen creating opportunities at home for fellow Oklahomans to experience art from within the state and beyond.
