Doel Reed Center for the Arts offers Summer Credit Courses, Scholarship Opportunity

The Doel Reed Center for the Arts is offering Oklahoma State University students a unique opportunity to experience one of the three credit courses offered this summer in Taos, New Mexico.
The center’s multi-disciplinary programming is open to all current OSU students. The courses, each lasting two weeks, explore various topics related to the art, culture, and experience of the Southwest. With these credit courses, the Doel Reed Center extends the university’s educational reach to new locations, allowing students to learn in a collaborative and inspiring environment beyond their regular classroom.
“The feedback from all participants tells us the classes continue to provide an innovative and enjoyable immersion into the unique culture of New Mexico,” said Dr. Carol Moder, director.
This summer’s courses include SOC 4950/SOC 5950: The Symbolic Construction of Community, examining the concept of a community through the locales of Taos; ART 4800/ART 5910: Converging Cultures: Art and Devotion, a brief but intensive introduction to the art and visual culture of Spanish New Mexico; and ENGL 4450/ENGL 5360: Hollywood Southwest, exploring the relationship between geography and storytelling in film and television production. Scholarships are available for full-time OSU students who intend to enroll in a Doel Reed Center summer course, and applications will be accepted until Friday, April 6. To learn more about applying for a scholarship, visit drca.okstate.edu/scholarships.
Ian C. Williams, a student in a 2016 course, “Tourism & Taos: Rhetorical Invention,” said he had a meaningful experience in Taos that was made possible by a Doel Reed Center for the Arts scholarship.
“During the two weeks I spent in Taos, I learned so much and developed valuable relationships with mentors and peers,” Williams said. “I could not have gone on this trip, had these experiences, and developed these skills without the scholarship I received.”
