Ideas become working applications in App Competition finals

Oklahoma State University student app developers demonstrated for judges how their mobile applications work in the finals of the sixth annual OSU App Center From Research to App Competition March 26. Three teams of developers competed for $7,000 in prize money.

For the contest finals, called Demo Day, two winning app ideas from the competition’s first phase, judged last November, were chosen by students as a foundation for designing a complete app. The team of Kaleb Cooper and Robert Delametter won first place with their design of reCapp, one of the two ideas from phase one. The app is a crowd-sourcing tool designed for users to document the outdoors with photographs and connect with other users on a social platform. Each won $1,500. The app was a winning phase-one idea created by William Hammond.

The second app concept from phase one was the Fire Dynamics Calculator designed to provide investigators with a mobile tool to aid fire investigations. Developers Luke Davis and Mason Russell won first place, and $1,500 each for their app design. The runner-up Fire Dynamics Calculator app was created by Charmal Damith Perera Mahapatabendige, who won $1,000. The original phase-one idea for the Fire Dynamics Calculator was conceived by James Lord.

The competition sought mobile app ideas to solve a significant problem for the general public or researchers. Organizers were looking for ideas from all scientific, engineering, humanities and art disciplines.

“It is tremendous to see how students challenge themselves to learn app development skills in the span of two month during this competition,” said Jai Rajendran, manager of the App Center and competition organizer. “I am extremely happy about the apps that were presented today.”

The competition is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Riata Center for Entrepreneurship in the Spears School of Business.
