Memorial dedication set for OSUPD officer killed in 1992

The public is invited to the dedication of a new memorial for former Oklahoma State University Police Officer Brent Daniel at 2 p.m. June 22 at Lake Carl Blackwell. On May 14, 1992, Daniel and his girlfriend, Shelly Manley, were on his motorcycle on State Highway 51C when they were struck from behind by a drunk driver traveling more than 90 mph. Daniel was killed. Manley, who was critically injured, has gone on to dedicate her life to helping individuals as a behavioral health adviser.
The new memorial is replacing a weathered wooden marker with a permanent metal cross that will include a plaque and a 3-D brushed steel copy of Daniel’s badge. The OSUPD spearheaded the efforts for a new memorial. Annual permit holders at the lake also joined in and raised funds.
Individuals attending the memorial can enter the lake for free. The dedication and unveiling will be on Highway 51C, 1.4 miles north of Highway 51.
Speakers include OSUPD Chief Leon Jones, Officer Daniel’s brother Brian Daniel, Shelly (Manley) Whiting and OHP Trooper Steve Burrows, who was the first officer on the scene and a friend of Daniel’s.
“This is a fitting memorial for a fallen officer,” Jones said. “I remember Brent from his days on the department. He was a wonderful person and a quality officer. The collision that took his life occurred 27 years ago, but once you’re part of the law enforcement family, you’re always part of it. We will take time to remember. It’s also fitting that this memorial honor Shelly Whiting as well, who has taken her tragedy and turned it into a lifetime of helping others.”
