The Oklahoma State University Museum of Art presents Intentional Exposure: Photography from the Permanent Collection, an exhibition featuring photography and the curatorial work of OSU students. The exhibition opens Tuesday, April 2, with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 3.
Intentional Exposure will feature photography donated by Robert Flynn Johnson over the past nine years, as well as other works from the OSU Museum of Art permanent collection. The exhibition will showcase works by internationally recognized photographers such as Gordon Parks, Sally Mann, Arnold Genthe, Imogen Cunningham and Robert Doisneau.
Johnson, a significant donor to the OSU Museum of Art’s permanent collection, will present a talk “A journey not a destination: The importance of original art in a learning environment and why I donate to institutions of higher learning,” at 6 p.m. April 3.
Intentional Exposure was curated by OSU students in Dr. Louise Siddons’ history of photography curatorial seminar course. The course introduces curatorial methods used in museums, as well as photography techniques, notable photographers and the history of photography.
“The history of photography portion of this class has given us a better foundation when moving into the curatorial work for this show,” said Katlyn Young, OSU art history student. “We hope visitors will think critically about what these images might be concealing and revealing.”
The class worked in teams, covering essay content, graphic design, adult and K-12 education and the installation processes.
“It was interesting to be able to experience the entire process of an exhibition,” said Catarina de Araújo, OSU graduate teaching assistant of art history. “Although it was challenging, I feel very proud of all the hard work that was put into this show. I am thrilled to be able to share it with the community of Stillwater.”
Intentional Exposure: Photography from the Permanent Collection is on view at the OSU Museum of Art through June 1. All exhibitions and events at the museum are free to the public.
Exhibitions and programs at the OSU Museum of Art are supported by Malinda and Dick Fischer, Mary Ann and Ken Fergeson, the OSU Museum of Art Advocates, the Raymond & Bessie Kravis Foundation, and the OSU Museum of Art Founding Patrons and Charter Members.
