Two Oklahoma State University researchers were named to the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list from Clarivate.

This year, 6,849 researchers from 67 nations and regions across the globe were recognized. Among those were Dr. Weili Zhang —professor of electrical engineering and a member of the Ultrafast Terahertz Research Group at OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology — and Spears School of Business Dr. Kevin So, the William S. Spears Chair in Business and the program’s Ph.D. coordinator.

“Our strategic research imperative is to elevate OSU among the ranks of top-tier universities and advance research that impacts society,” said Dr. Kenneth Sewell, vice president for research. “There are many different ways the work of an OSU researcher impacts society; one is by influencing the types of research conducted by other scholars from all around the world. When an OSU researcher is highly cited, that is a sure sign that their work is being amplified and multiplied, influencing their entire field of study.”

This is the fifth year in a row for Zhang to receive the honor in the physics area and third straight year for So to receive the honor in the social sciences area.

Annually, the list recognizes worldwide scientists who have exhibited substantial and widespread influence in their research areas. They contribute exceptionally to extending the boundaries of knowledge and bring about innovations that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and more secure world for society.

The selected recipients have authored multiple Highly Cited Papers, which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year on the Web of Science citation index.

The methodology that determines the prominent list of influential researchers relies on data and analysis conducted by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. It also uses tallies to identify the countries and research institutions where these citation elites are based.

“As the need for high-quality data from rigorously selected sources is becoming ever more important, we have adapted and responded to technological advances and changes in the publishing landscape,” said David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. “Just as we have applied stringent standards and transparent selection criteria to identify trusted journals, we have evolved our evaluation and selection policies for our annual Highly Cited Researchers program to address the challenges of an increasingly complex and polluted scholarly record.”
