Oklahoma State University will welcome Chancellor Sean Burrage, chief executive officer of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, as the keynote speaker for its fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 12 and 13 inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Burrage oversees the state’s public higher education system, which includes 25 colleges and universities, 10 agencies and key statewide initiatives such as OneNet and the Oklahoma College Assistance Program. As chancellor, he leads efforts focused on academic excellence, strategic planning, budget allocations, tuition and scholarship programs — including the state’s signature scholarship initiative, Oklahoma’s Promise.
“Chancellor Burrage’s distinguished career in education, law and public service reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing opportunities for Oklahomans,” OSU President Jim Hess said. “Sean has been a champion for higher education in Oklahoma, ensuring students are at the heart of every decision. His leadership across multiple sectors embodies the values we hope our graduates carry with them as they begin their own professional journeys.”
Before assuming his current role, Burrage served as vice president for executive affairs and chief of staff at the University of Oklahoma, where he directed key strategic projects. He previously served as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he strengthened operations, expanded enrollment and enhanced fundraising.
A former managing partner at the Taylor Burrage Law Firm, Burrage represented Rogers and Mayes counties in the Oklahoma Senate for two terms, serving as minority floor leader from 2011-14 and authoring more than 50 bills signed into law.
Born in Durant and raised in Antlers, Burrage is a proud member of the Choctaw Nation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.
OSU’s fall commencement ceremonies will celebrate graduates from all academic colleges, recognizing their achievements and contributions to the Cowboy family. Full event details and streaming information will be available at commencement.okstate.edu.
