On Monday, the Student Union Activities Board hosted the fourth annual Mr. Oklahoma State University pageant inside the Student Union Theater.
Anthony McNeal, a junior studying business finance, placed first and won the title of Mr. OSU. McNeal was also awarded a $500 scholarship. The Student Union Activities Board hosts the event.
McNeal ran against three other men: Jermaine Kelley Jr., Patrick Franks and Tyler Tripodi.
“I just wanted to try something new and show my face for my community,” McNeal said. “I also wanted to encourage everybody to do anything they set their mind to.”
McNeal focused his platform on challenging and deconstructing toxic masculinity.
“I want to promote a healthier, more inclusive definition of masculinity, where vulnerability, emotional intelligence and respect for all are celebrated,” McNeal said.
The Mr. OSU pageant consisted of three rounds: interview questions, talent and formal attire.
For the talent portion, McNeal recited poetry from author Rudyard Kipling, famed writer of “The Jungle Book.” Members of his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, cheered him on during this pageant portion.
When McNeal was crowned, friends and family surrounded him in excitement.
“I hope to expand my platform in deconstructing toxic masculinity with this title and making sure everyone is comfortable with themselves,” McNeal said.
