“Guild Hall: An Adventure in the Arts” opened Jan. 20 at the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art.

This exhibition, showcasing works borrowed from the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, New York, brings with it household names such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and many more.

Dr. Kirsten Olds — associate provost for the arts, Marilynn & Carl Thoma Professor of the Arts and director of the OSU Museum of Art — emphasized how exciting having this exhibition at the OSU Museum of Art is for community members and students alike.

“For some of our visitors, they likely have heard of Thomas Moran, Andy Warhol or Jackson Pollock, but may not have had the chance to see an artwork in person, up close, by those artists,” Olds said. “You’ll be able to see Chuck Close’s iconic grayscale grid technique and come eye to eye with Warhol’s haunting Marilyn Monroe.”

These renowned artists helped develop Long Island’s East End to become an artistic hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the culture that those artists experienced and shaped can be seen in their artworks. The exhibition features portraits, landscapes, scenes of everyday life, photography, mixed media, prints, sculpture and abstract paintings, spanning 126 years of artistic production.

Even though the Hamptons are 1,500 miles from Stillwater, Olds offered some unexpected similarities between the two locations.

“Coastal New York artist’s colony meets America’s Friendliest College Town,” Olds said. “This exhibition emphasizes how community can lead to artistic innovations; the works come from the collection of a small museum in a small town on the eastern end of New York’s Long Island, but represent a ‘who’s who’ of the art scene of the 20th century. This is due to the sense of community that developed on eastern Long Island, formed by artists seeking new perspectives, a slower pace of life and vibrant peers with whom to share their work.”

Stillwater knows a thing or two about being a small town with a strong community, and that is one reason why the OSU Museum of Art believes this exhibition will resonate with local visitors as well as those further afield.

This exhibition is on view Jan. 20 - May 16, 2026 with a reception at 5 p.m., March 5, at the OSU Museum of Art. To learn more, visit the website
