OSU leads the nation in number of doctorates awarded to Native Americans

The latest statistics from the Survey of Earned Doctorates shows OSU easily leads the nation in the number of doctorates awarded to Native Americans. OSU awarded doctorates to 33 Native Americans in the period from 2002-06, according to the SED report, which is funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The next highest total was 18 by both Arizona State and the University of North Dakota. OU ranks fourth nationally with 17 doctorates awarded over the same period.

 

OSU-OKC receives $115,000 Kirkpatrick Foundation gift for smart classroom

Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City announced a $115,000 grant award from the Kirkpatrick Foundation. It will equip a Smart Classroom for the new veterinary technology department area in the Agriculture Resource Center, currently under construction on the OSU-OKC campus and funded by the late John E. Kirkpatrick with a $1 million gift in 2006. Facilitating transmission of real-time activities, this state-of-the-art classroom will provide for collaboration between OSU-OKC’s veterinary technology program in Oklahoma City and the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences in Stillwater, as well as other departments on the OSU-OKC campus. This high-tech classroom will also offer an exciting new venue to the community with increased capacity for conferences, interviews, guest speakers and distance education opportunities. OSU organization and president receive national recognition

The National Association of Graduate Professional Students has awarded two of its six annual awards to OSU. Both the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association at OSU and its president, Chris Wright, were chosen for the national honors this year. Wright, from Tulsa, is being recognized for his demonstrated leadership skills during his three years with GPSGA including a year at its president. The organization itself is being honored for is demonstrated advocacy and support for graduate student rights, peer networking and academic community connections. 

 

Edwards receives national crop science award

It was a three-for-one nationwide deal for Oklahoma State University’s Jeff Edwards when he was honored by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America in November. Edwards, Cooperative Extension small grains specialist with the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, received the 2007 ASA-CSSA-SSSA Early Career Professional Award, recognizing his “outstanding contributions to crop science through national and international service, education and research.” An assistant professor in the department, Edwards’ programs focus mainly on grain-only and dual-purpose wheat production in the southern Great Plains states, with particular emphasis on reduced and no-tillage production systems. Damron receives national teaching excellence award

OSU’s Steve Damron has been named a 2007 recipient of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Sciences Excellence in College and University Teaching Award. Now in its 16th year, the award program celebrates the critical role educators perform in shaping the agriculture industry, especially in regards to training future leaders who will eventually be charged with providing sustainable natural resources, a safe and abundant food supply, viable communities and other services. Damron is a professor of animal science in OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, which includes the college and two statewide agencies: the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. OSU student crowned Miss Oklahoma USA

OSU student Lindsey Jo Harrington,  a senior in speech-language pathology, was crowned Miss Oklahoma USA at the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts in Norman on Sunday night. The 21-year-old Harrington, who earned special achievement recognition in the evening gown category, is from Frederick.  The win qualifies Harrington to compete in the Miss USA Pageant next spring.

 

Design open house celebrates student achievements, 100 years of electrical engineering

OSU’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering will host the second annual ECEN Design Day today (Tuesday, Dec. 4) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Student projects will be showcased throughout Engineering North including, robots in action, remotely controlled security and vending systems, automotive safety devices and a video game brought to life. A technical open house for the public and prospective students in high school and college, the event is also an annual celebration of design accomplishment by OSU students. This year, ECEN Design Day also marks 100 years of electrical and computer engineering at OSU.

The Office of the Registrar, 322 Student Union, will hold an open house on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 2 - 4 p.m.  Everyone on campus is invited to come and meet new Registrar Dr. Celeste Campbell and take a look at the recently remodeled office. Poinsettia consumer preference survey today

Individuals campus wide are invited to participate in a 10-minute poinsettia consumer preference survey today (Tuesday Dec. 4) in 169 Ag Hall and sign up afterwards for door prizes. You need not be present to win a prize. Twenty different cultivars will be viewed for consumer preference. Please stop by 169 AG Hall anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. if you wish to participate. “Holly-Day at the Garden” this Saturday

The OSU Botanical Garden will host “Holly-Day at the Garden” on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 3:30 – 6 p.m.  The event will feature a variety of demonstrations including holiday cooking, wreath making and indoor decorations for both youth and adults. There is a suggested donation of $5 for an individual and $10 for a family. For an additional fee, participants may make a wreath or a door swag.

Lincoln Street temporarily closed for waterline construction

Work to replace a chilled water line under Lincoln Street is expected to close the street for about 30 days. The OSU Department of Parking and Transit Services suggests alternative routes to lot 49 and parking for University Health Center via Hall of Fame and lot 91, which is directly south of the university track.  Lot 50, directly west of Animal Science Building and the attached loading dock, will be accessible through the entrance at Hall of Fame and Lincoln Street.  Also consider OPTIONS information is available at the Department of Parking and Transit Services’ website located at www.parking.okstate.edu or by contacting the Department at 744-6525.

Scholarship luncheon on Wednesday

Stillwater Woman Aid will host the annual Ann Baer Scholarship Luncheon Fundraiser on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Varsity Room in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Suggested donation for the meal is $5. SWA will also have several items for silent auction:  an autographed Minnesota jersey from former OSU football player Kevin Williams; an autographed football from Tatum Bell and teammates from the Detroit Tigers; an autographed Pittsburgh Steelers helmet from Ryan McBean; a round of golf with head golf coach Mike McGraw; and a two-hour house cleaning from Health Care Innovations. The $1,500 Ann Baer Scholarship is awarded to a female senior from the Payne County area in honor of Baer, former Oklahoma State Associate athletic director and senior women administrator. Second annual MLK award nominations due soon

The City of Stillwater’s Community Relations Committee is seeking nominations for its 2nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding Community Leader Award. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, and must include a completed 2008 nomination form (available online at stillwater.org) and a statement of support. Nominees should be a past or current resident of Stillwater. The award recipient(s) will be notified in December of his/her selection and then will be honored at an event on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Stillwater Community Center located at 8th Avenue and Duck Street. Concert to mark International Human Rights Month

In honor of International Human Rights Month, Amnesty International will host a concert at The Third Place, 215 S. Washington, on Friday, Dec. 7. The event is sponsored by OSU International Education and Outreach along with Amnesty International, GPSGA and SAGA.

 

Seretean Wellness Center to hold holiday open house

The Seretean Wellness Center staff invites you to a holiday open house on Wednesday, Dec. 12, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  Stop by 1514 W. Hall of Fame and visit with the knowledgeable staff about any of your health and wellness needs -- from fitness, to nutrition, to mediation, to managing stress, to assistive technology programs. Wellness tip: Mock sour cream                                  

Try this recipe as a sour cream substitute! Blend 1-cup low fat cottage cheese, 1/4 cup buttermilk and 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice in a blender until smooth. This makes 16 tablespoon-sized servings with only 14 calories and 0.3 grams of fat per serving! Use as a topping for baked potatoes, gazpacho and low fat tacos.
