Educational Technology Degrees Now Offered Online

The educational technology program in the College of Education, Health and Aviation is now offering two online degree options for students interested in furthering their education, a Master of Science in Educational Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching.

“It’s important we continue to adapt to the needs of our students and provide flexible and affordable options,” said John Romans, dean of the College of Education, Health and Aviation.

Students can expect a hands-on, collaborative and innovative learning experience, even with the online delivery format, as they explore the use of technology to appropriately support the teaching and learning of any subject area. 

“There really is a culture of sharing ideas and helping each other,” said Dr. Penny Thompson, associate professor of educational technology and program coordinator. “We have online discussion boards and video chats in our courses that encourage conversation and collaboration.”

The master’s program has two options, educational technology and school library media. The educational technology option focuses on instructional design, online teaching, information management and multimedia design. Graduates are qualified to serve as educational technologists within schools, universities and corporate settings. The school library media option leads to advanced certification as a school media library specialist in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State University was recently included on the list of Most Affordable Online Master’s in Educational Technology and Best Online Master’s in Educational Technology by College Choice, ranked No. 7 and No. 20, respectively. The program was also included on the 30 Best Online Master’s in Educational Technology Degree Programs by TheBestSchools.org. 

Educational technology also offers a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching, which can be completed on its own or added to an existing master’s or doctoral program. After two semesters of coursework, students are equipped with the tools needed to design, develop, deliver and sustain online learning in education, business or industry.

“Our degrees can complement a variety of different careers and workplaces,” said Thompson. “We want to help students learn how to find, select and implement the technology to support the teaching work they are doing.”
