Oklahoma State University has been approved by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) to provide a new financial planning certificate for undergraduate students.

“The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) and the College of Human Sciences have been involved in providing a graduate program in family financial planning that provides the educational component that leads to the Certified Financial Planner™ designation for over 17 years,” HDFS department head Sissy R. Osteen said. “We are very pleased that we can now offer this opportunity to undergraduates. Finances are core to the functioning of families, and we are proud to prepare our students to help individuals and families make vital decisions about resources and meeting their goals.”

The Certified Financial PlannerÔ Certification Education Program is an 18-hour certificate program open to any major with sophomore standing and a 2.5 grade point average.  OSU is currently accepting students for the program. Individuals interested in enrolling or learning more about the program are encouraged to contact Dr. Kate Mielitz at 405.744.6052.

“CFP Board is pleased to approve the program at Oklahoma State University as a CFP Board Registered Program,” said Richard Salmen, CFP®, chair of CFP Board’s Board of Directors.  “As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that OSU’s program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain the CFP® certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning.”

CFP Board is a Washington, D.C.-based independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to benefit the public by granting, upholding and promoting the Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) certification. Those who earn the certification are distinguishing themselves among their peers by meeting CFP Board’s education, examination, experience and ethics requirements.  Students completing the financial planning program at OSU will have met the Education requirement for CFP® Certification Examination administered by CFP Board.
