Tomko Wins First Place and People’s Choice at College 3MT Competition

Patrick Tomko, a doctoral student in health and human performance, won first place, the People’s Choice Award and a $600 cash prize at the College of Education, Health and Aviation’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on Oct. 24.

Tomko will go on to represent EHA at the 3MT final competition hosted by the OSU Graduate College on Nov. 6 using his research presentation, “Resistance Exercise-Mediates Improvements in Post-Prandial Metabolic Response and is Related to Resistance Exercise Volume and Skeletal Muscle Mass.” Tomko is advised by Dr. Nathaniel Jenkins.

In addition, Drew Gossen, a doctoral student in education, placed second, winning a $200 cash prize with his presentation, “Teachers: The Challenge of Learning Content and Pedagogy. Dr. Toni Ivey serves as his adviser. Lisa Seay, a doctoral student in educational leadership and policy studies, received third place and won $100 for her presentation, “Oklahoma’s Teacher Shortage: The Role Salary Plays in the Decision of Oklahoma’s Pre-Service Teachers in Leaving the State.” Seay’s adviser is Dr. Jackie Mania-Singer.

Students participating in the 3MT competition have three minutes to present their research to a panel of judges. Judging criteria includes communication, comprehension and engagement of graduate student research to a non-specialist audience.
