The Oklahoma State University College of Education and Human Sciences is now accepting applications for a new, fully-online Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education English, set to begin in Fall 2025.

This innovative program prepares graduates to teach English language arts for grades 5-12, offering a comprehensive curriculum that includes literature, composition and young adult literature studies.

"We are filling a need to support students who want to enter the teaching profession through a comprehensive path toward certification. Students will have the opportunity to engage with highly qualified faculty who are experts in education and English scholarship," said Dr. Sarah Donovan, program coordinator. “At OSU, we take pride in our role as mentors across the career and lifespan of our students, and we want to offer this across the country and world through an online program.”

Key features of the program include:

  • 122 credit hours, including general education, major-specific courses and a student teaching experience
  • Flexible online format using Canvas, OSU's learning platform
  • In-person field experiences and student teaching internship
  • Full teacher certification preparation for Oklahoma, with readiness for certification exams in other states

The online option provides convenience and flexibility for course completion, while still offering a high-quality academic experience and connections with expert faculty. This makes it ideal for balancing work schedules, family obligations or other unique life circumstances.

“This program offers flexibility to fit into the real lives of students who work, have families, and want to learn and teach in their local communities,” Donovan said. “Students can balance work, home, and studies while completing fieldwork in local communities.”

An alternative certification track is also available for those not seeking traditional certification.

True to OSU's land-grant mission, this degree provides another opportunity for individuals whose career goals are to make a difference in their communities as educators.
