The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology Professional Development has launched a new online certificate program in Construction Project Management. The program was developed in collaboration with Rachel Mosier, Ph.D., P.E., associate professor in Construction Engineering Technology, and is targeted toward commercial construction applications.

“The course modules were designed in mind for those with little construction knowledge or experience,” Mosier said. “The content is also applicable for architects, interior designers, and engineers seeking a change in career paths. The course content covers everything from soils, structures, codes, and sustainability to estimating, print reading, scheduling, communications and project management.”

The Construction Project Management certificate program can be completed asynchronously allowing participants to complete each module as their schedules allow. The program includes lectures and application of skills learned through mini projects and activities utilizing free downloadable software. The content is grounded in practical application and the course is categorized into the following modules:

  • The introduction includes an overview of construction terms, materials and methods. Soils, structures, mechanical, electrical and plumbing to waterproofing are briefly discussed. Codes, accessibility, egress and sustainability are also described.
  • Print reading focuses on understanding dimensioned drawings including plans, sections and elevations.
  • Estimating provides a variety of tools for estimating quantities and bidding.
  • Scheduling starts with terms, logic and understanding precedence diagrams.
  • Communication provides a basic overview of the importance of communication in the construction process, through meetings, written and verbal communication as well as documentation.
  • Project Management provides an overview of managing a construction project and includes codes, contract types and relationships between the parties.

“In keeping with Professional Development’s commitment to creating industry-responsive training and certificate programs, this course provides the application of project management that is so relevant to today’s construction industry,” said Jessica Stewart, Director of Professional Development. “By taking this certificate course, participants have the unique opportunity to develop a valuable skillset from Dr. Mosier, who has direct industry experience as a municipal construction project manager and is a subject matter expert in sustainability in construction.”
