Dr. Sunderesh Heragu — Regents Professor and John Hendrix Chair of the Oklahoma State University School of Industrial Engineering and Management — is a recipient of the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Global Engineering Education Award.

The award will be presented to him at the IEOM Oman Conference Awards Ceremony on Dec. 3.

The award recognizes outstanding achievements, service and dedication in global engineering education in the industrial engineering and operations management professions. The recipient of this award demonstrates an ability to link engineering education with the utmost professional practice.

Before his tenure at OSU, Heragu worked at the University of Louisville, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and State University of New York-Plattsburgh. He held visiting appointments at State University of New York-Buffalo, Technical University of Eindhoven, University of Twente and IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center.

Heragu is the author of the 5th edition of Facilities Design and has authored or co-authored over 250 articles. He has served as Principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects totaling over $27 million funded by the Department of Homeland Security, National Science Foundation, Defense Logistics Agency, and private companies such as ConocoPhillips, General Electric and TreeHouse Foods.

Heragu is president-elect for the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. He is a Fellow of IISE, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the World Academy of Productivity Sciences. He has received the Reed-Apple Award from the Material Handling Institute, the David F Baker Distinguished Research Award, the Fred C. Crane Distinguished Service Award and the Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award, as well as best paper awards from IISE.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this global recognition from a society I have admired for a number of years,” Heragu said. “My thoughts on important engineering topics have been disseminated via my books, papers, taIks, op-eds and educational products, which are used throughout the world. My students and colleagues have helped shape these thoughts. For that, I will always be grateful. I stand on the shoulders of my students and collaborators, so this award is also a recognition of their contributions.”

Keynote speaker at the 2nd GCC International Conference on IEOM

Heragu was also selected as the keynote speaker for the 2nd GCC International Conference on IEOM, which will be held in Muscat, Oman, from Dec. 1-3. He will discuss supply chain challenges and opportunities in the post-COVID-19 era.

Heragu noted that the world has been facing much uncertainty ever since COVID-19. His keynote description states:

“Supply chain, a topic that an average consumer did not need to know much about or care, now dominates our news cycle. A number of factors, including automation, climate change, demographic shifts, income inequality, political climate (60% of the world’s population went to the polls this year), population growth, migration, new business paradigms, regional conflicts, have contributed to it. In this talk, Dr. Heragu explores the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.”

The IEOM Society International, a nonprofit professional organization, is a premier global platform dedicated to advancing industrial engineering and operations management discipline for the betterment of humanity.
