Ethicist to discuss health care, physician-assisted suicide

Lectures at OSU campuses in Tulsa and Stillwater open to the public.
(February 21, 2008  STILLWATER, Okla.) – Tom Beauchamp, author and renowned ethicist will discuss ethical issues related to health care and physician-assisted suicide on March 3 and 4 at Oklahoma State University.

In Tulsa on March 3, his lecture is titled “Physician-Assisted Suicide and You.” That evening in Stillwater, he will discuss “Ethical Issues in Health Care Resource Allocation.” On March 4, he will explore “The Ethics of Physician-Assisted Suicide.”

Beauchamp’s lectures present controversial biomedical ethics topics in a lively and engaging way providing audience members with the full range of issues involved, says Lorraine Landry, an assistant professor of philosophy at OSU who is overseeing Beauchamp’s visit to Oklahoma.

“During his decades in the field, Dr. Beauchamp has authored many articles and books advancing the field of ethics and has contributed greatly to public’s understanding by serving on several President’s Commissions and lecturing widely,” she said.

Beauchamp is a philosophy professor and senior research scholar at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. He earned graduate degrees from Yale University and The Johns Hopkins University. He is a staff member of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research.
