With topics ranging from the use of AI in internal medicine to preventing the progression of chronic kidney disease to treatment for Alzheimer’s, the 13th annual  Richard C. Staab, DO Memorial Symposium will cover it all.

The symposium will be April 4-5, presented by the Oklahoma State University Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine, and hosted on the OSU Center for Health Sciences campus in Tulsa.

In addition to providing valuable continuing education for physician attendees, the event supports the ongoing educational needs of internal medicine residents at OSU Medical Center. The memorial symposium pays tribute to the late Dr. Richard C. Staab, a prominent oncologist with ties to Tulsa who understood the mission of training young osteopathic physicians.

While many attendees come from Tulsa and the surrounding region, others come from across the country or attend virtually. Under the leadership of OSU internal medicine physicians Dr. Kathy Cook and Dr. Mousumi Som, the event has experienced tremendous growth over the years starting as a one-day, six-hour event to now a two-day, 16-hour symposium. Continuing education at the Staab Symposium is accredited by the Osteopathic Founders Foundation.

One of the highly anticipated speakers for the last decade has been Dr. Robert Busch from Albany Medical College and Albany Med Heath System in Albany, New York. A renowned board-certified endocrinologist, Busch frequently provides updates on diabetes care and his clinical trials with pharmaceuticals like GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic.

“I have really enjoyed coming to present at this conference. It’s very well attended and they ask great questions. They’re very attentive to the speakers, which makes it a great experience for me,” he said. “I’ve also witnessed the evolution of the campus at OSU Center for Health Sciences over the years. They have incredible facilities there, especially the modern labs.”

Sharing information to improve primary care is the ultimate goal of the symposium each year. With strong support from the teaching hospital, local osteopathic foundations and organizations and nationally recognized speakers each year, the Staab Symposium at OSU aims to educate physicians for years to come.
