OSU breaks ground to expand animal disease diagnostic laboratory
The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences marked the beginning of a new era in molecular diagnostics today at the Veterinary Center’s Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.  The OADDL hosted a non-traditional groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate an expansion project.  To emphasize the importance of molecular diagnostics in determining the cause of death in the animal cases handled by the laboratory, dignitaries donned white veterinary coats and poured various liquids into a large beaker creating an “OSU orange” solution.  Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Terry Peach was the guest speaker. Patriotic pregame set for OSU-Texas
Fans coming to Boone Pickens Stadium will want to arrive early to enjoy the patriotic pageantry prior to the OSU-Texas football game on Nov. 3. The pregame festivities include an appearance by Challenger   (the first bald eagle in U.S. history trained to free-fly into major league sports stadiums) during the presentation of the national anthem. Challenger is cared for by the American Eagle Foundation , which is dedicated to the preservation and protection of the domestic bald eagle and its habitat.  In addition, OSU has planned a fly-over featuring four F-16 "Fighting Falcon" aircraft piloted by OSU alums from the Oklahoma Air National Guard's 138th Fighter Wing .
 
Rise School open house tomorrow
Everyone is invited to attend the Rise School open house tomorrow from  2:30 – 4:30 p.m. at 1601 S. Main in Stillwater. Parking is available in the lot between the Multi-Arts building and the library at Duck and 12th Avenue.  Interim OSU System CEO and President Marlene Strathe will be among those who will speak at the short ceremony starting at 3 p.m.  Assistant State Superintendent Ramona Paul, State Representative Lee Denny, Mary Gonzales and Sally Brown are also scheduled to speak. 
 
OSU to dedicate Halligan Hall of Scholars tomorrow
The “Halligan Hall of Scholars” will be dedicated tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 2)  at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Oklahoma Room. Students, faculty and staff are invited to help officially designate the area to recognize the 21 major national and international awards won by students during the decade of Jim and Ann Halligan’s service to OSU. A plaque describing the Hall and high points of the Halligan era at OSU will be unveiled and placed at the hall entrance. Several past and current students will speak, and Kyle Ensley, international business and political science junior from Valliant, will be honored for winning a Pickering Scholarship from the Foreign Service last summer.
 
White named 2007 President’s Outstanding Faculty Member at OSU-Tulsa
Oklahoma State University-Tulsa President Gary Trennepohl has announced Dr. Margaret White as this year’s recipient of the President’s Outstanding Faculty Award. White, an associate professor of management, has taught at OSU for more than 21 years. Trennepohl said White is an educator whose scholarly work is exceptional both inside and outside of the classroom.  White said that while she is delighted by the acknowledgment, her greatest reward is experiencing the learning environment of a classroom.  During her teaching career, White has been named an Outstanding MBA Professor and has been honored with the Dean’s Excellence in Research Award, the Celebrate State Presidential Award, and the CBA Greiner Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.  For more details, click here .
 
OSU Veterinary College to honor distinguished alumni
The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine will honor Dr. Anton Kammerlocher of Norman and Dr. Lee G. Simmons, Jr., of Omaha, Neb., with its distinguished alumni awards tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 2) at the ConocoPhillips Alumni Center in Stillwater.  During his military career, Dr. Kammerlocher received many commendations medals and honors for assisting areas of the world by applying his veterinary medicine knowledge and skills.  In 1965, he established Anton’s Animal Hospital in Norman, Okla., where he practiced until he retired in 2001. Dr. Simmons graduated from OSU with his DVM degree in 1963.  He has been the director of the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo since 1970.  He is known nationally and abroad for his contributions to wildlife conservation and zoo medicine. OSU Soccer closes out its home schedule by hosting OU this Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. OSU Head Coach Colin Carmichael has asked for your help in breaking season attendance records, so join the Sea of Orange tonight and “Orange Out” the competition.  Bedlam bragging rights are on the line, so come out to the Cowgirl Soccer Complex and make a difference for your team ... and remember to get your Orange Reward stamp to earn FREE STUFF!
 
Tonight is Bug Movie Night at OSU-Stillwater
Classic B-movies and unusual crunchy munchies at intermission are set for tonight (Thursday, Nov. 1) in 106 Noble Research Center when OSU’s entomology 2003 class throws open the doors to the public from 6 – 10 p.m. for science fiction bug classics: The 1954 movie “Them!” and “Starship Troopers” from 1997. There is no cost to attend and all bugs will be provided free of charge. Seating will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. The Sanborn Entomology Club is hosting the event. The second feature is rated R and is probably better suited for an adult audience. Movie-goers can come to both or either of the films as they will be shown back-to-back, with the arthropod-based food served during intermission. The second feature will start about 8:30 p.m.
 
OSU College of Education to host special education panel tomorrow
The College of Education will host a Special Education Parent Panel on Friday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Willard Hall, room 010, on the OSU-Stillwater campus. Four women who are either parents of special needs children or special education teachers will be featured on the panel to share their experiences and answer questions as part of an interactive dialogue. More than 100 professional education students from OSU will attend the panel discussion, which is also open to the public with limited seating available. Alum and head of American Society for Microbiology to speak at OSU
Professor Clifford W. Houston, an OSU alumnus, will present a seminar titled “Present and Future Challenges (Opportunities) Facing the American Society for Microbiology,” on Monday Nov. 5, at 3:45 p.m. in 215 Life Sciences East. He will meet with faculty and students afterward. Houston is the current president of the American Society for Microbiology, which is the single largest society for life science disciplines with over 43,000 scientists and health professionals as members.  Houston also serves as associate vice president for educational outreach at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he holds the Herman Barnett Distinguished Endowed Professorship in Microbiology. His research at Galveston is focused on understanding the role of bacterial toxins in the pathogenesis of disease. Houston received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in 2000.
 
Mr. and Ms. International Pageant ahead
The International Student Organization will present the Mr. and Ms. International Pageant on Nov. 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. The scholarship pageant is an opportunity for international students to showcase their beauty, talent and culture. Come and enjoy performances of OSU’s most talented international students. Got books? Get them next Tuesday to benefit United Way
A book sale to benefit the OSU United Way drive will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor hallway of Whitehurst. Paperbacks will be 50 cents and hardbacks $1 until 1 p.m. when customers will be offered two books for the price of one.
 
ECO-OSU renewing call for artists to get involved in upcoming festival
ECO-OSU is inviting artists to enter environmentally-themed works in Stillwater’s first ECO-ART Festival which is set for Nov. 30 from 6 – 10 p.m. The student environmental group is working with the City of Stillwater to block off a portion of “The Strip” for the event, which will include an art contest with environmental specific art displays, live music, informational booths, vendors, food and  more.  Artists can submit works and drawings in any medium and graphic designs, photography work and poems are welcome.  The top three winners in both student and adult categories will receive cash prizes. The art displays will be set up in Third Place. The new Energy Education Program adds informational Web site
The OSU Energy Education Program is a people-based energy management program that promotes conservation of electricity, gas, and water on each of the OSU campuses by identifying and creating awareness of opportunities for energy savings and streamlining usage during unoccupied times. OSU has five energy educator/managers responsible for visiting specific buildings to create energy report cards that can be used to assist occupants in their efforts to follow the OSU Energy Guidelines. Through the efforts of the EEMs, Energy Education Inc., and the cooperation of OSU faculty, staff, and students, the energy education program is expected to save more than $22 million over the next seven years. Requirements for new scholarship announced
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the Department of Animal Science has worked together to create a non-Greek (social Greek organizations) undergraduate scholarship for students from underrepresented populations who major in animal science and have shown excellent academic progress while attending OSU. This scholarship will be awarded to selected undergraduate students during the 2008-2009 academic year. The requirements are: a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, minimum of 28 hours completed (12 at OSU) before deadline, major in the Department of Animal Science, participation in extracurricular activities, and must be enrolled full-time animal science student. The deadline for this scholarship is Jan. 15, 2008, and if you would like more information or a copy of the scholarship, contact Phi Beta Sigma President Andre Storey at andreis@okstate.edu.
 
Study on sizing and fit of women's jackets looking for participants
Researchers are looking for women who would like to participate in a study on sizing and fit of women's jackets by the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising at OSU. Participation will take about 20 minutes. Participants need to be 26 to 55 years-old, 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, bust below 41 inches, hips below 43 inches. Participants will be asked to have their height, weight, bust and hip measurements taken, try on four jackets, be photographed in each jacket, and comment on the fit of the jackets. Participants in the study will receive a tote as a gift and a chance to participate in a lottery drawing for $30 gift card [1 in 10 will win]. Employees can enroll in or make changes to health care, dental, vision, and flexible benefits during this annual enrollment period. You’re invited to seriously consider BlueCross coverage for yourself and eligible dependents since there is no pre-existing condition clause during this special enrollment period, regardless of coverage or lack of coverage in 2007. WEALTH Week ahead
Share The WEALTH is sponsoring WEALTH WEEK November 6-9th!  The Share The WEALTH peer health educators (students helping students) are providing FREE health information on various topics.

Tuesday, Nov. 7, check out “Eating Disorder Awareness Booth” at the Student Union from 12:30-2 p.m.

Safe Zone: LGBT Allies Training
Safe Zone is a program which identifies "gay friendly" faculty and staff and students to provide support and resources for Oklahoma State University gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. If you are Safe Zone trained, students know they can come to you for help, advice, or just to talk with someone who is supportive of their sexual orientation. The next allies training session is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 2) from 1 – 4 p.m. in Willard 201. Celebrate “Oklahoma at 100”
Join the Stillwater Choral Community in celebrating “Oklahoma at 100” - A Gala Concert on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Stillwater High School Performing Arts Center. The evening will include operatic soprano Leona Mitchell and feature the Stillwater Honor Choir, Stillwater Junior High School Choir, Stillwater High School Pioneer Chorale, and the Stillwater Chamber Singers (which includes some OSU faculty and staff). All music is written by Oklahoma composers, and performed by Oklahoma singers and instrumentalists from ages 7 – 70.  Admission is $8, or $5 for student/senior. Teambuilding session offered by Spears School of Business and LeadershipSource soon
The Spears School of Business is offering the next session in a leadership series Thursday, Nov. 8, from  2:30 – 4:30 p.m at the CREC Training Center, 3304 S. Boomer Road. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., will be hosting the second round of its Family Feud competition on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in room 202 of the Classroom Building. Club-level seats available to help United Way and The Chicken
Two club-level seats at Boone Pickens Stadium could be yours for the OSU vs Kansas game if you’re the winner in an upcoming drawing that will benefit the OSU drive for Stillwater’s United Way. The drawing for the seats will be held Friday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. Tickets for the drawing are just $2 each, three for $5 or six for $10. Reportedly, the amount collected could be a consideration in current deliberations to free “The Chicken” after his recent untimely arrest (click here ). Lake Carl Blackwell trout pond opens today
The trout pond at Lake Carl Blackwell is preparing to open for a third season starting today (Thursday, Nov. 1). A $3 daily access permit for the lake and a $3 special trout permit is required. Children 8 and under fish free with a paid adult. The limit is three trout per day per person. An enclosed fishing dock is available and good for catching crappie and saugeye. The Lakeside Convenience Store sells permits, bait and tackle as well as snacks, drinks and pizza. Flu shots available next week
The Seretean Wellness Center has received a limited supply of flu shots.  The staff will be on campus the following days and times to provide flu shots to OSU faculty and staff:
Monday, Nov. 5, Student Union/Starlight Terrace, noon – 2 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 6, Noble Research Center Atrium, 1 – 3 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 7, Willard Living Room, 10 a.m. – noon
Thursday, Nov. 8, Physical Plant, 101J Physical Plant Building, 1 – 3 p.m.
Shots will be given on a first come, first serve basis only and the cost of the flu shot is $15.  If you have HealthChoice Insurance, the $15 will be billed to your insurance. You must bring a copy of your insurance card.  If you do not have HealthChoice, the $15 is payable in cash or check only (correct change is appreciated). The OSU Lahoma Club presents “What’s in Fashion – circa 1907?”
Help celebrate Oklahoma’s 100th birthday at the next meeting of the OSU Lahoma Club, which will feature a 1907 Clothing Style Show and luncheon Monday, Nov. 12, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meditations, located on Country Club Road west of Stillwater. Veterinarian to speak about back pain in dogs
Dr. Kristy Broaddus will talk about back problems in dogs at the next Community Pet Care Seminar, sponsored by Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The seminar will take place in McElroy Hall, which is located at the corner of McFarland and Farm Road on the Stillwater campus. Broaddus’ talk will include information on how dogs injure themselves, the surgery to repair the damage, and the prophylactic laser disk ablation process. Pet Care Seminars are open to the public. Complimentary parking, admission and light refreshments are provided. Past and current art instructors represented at current exhibition
The OSU Department of Art will hold a reception Friday, Nov. 9, for “Centennial Annual Faculty Exhibition,” a show of current and former art professors that celebrates Oklahoma’s Centennial. The reception will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Gardiner Art Gallery, 108 Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts on the OSU campus. Included are more than 30 works juxtaposed with current pieces and historical images of the art department. Exhibitors include graphic design, studio art and adjunct faculty as well as emeritus faculty. It also pays tribute to faculty members who have passed away. Healthy holiday cooking with the Seretean Wellness Center
Join Professional Chef Lisa Becklund as she provides new recipes and ideas for healthy holiday cooking.  Just because it’s healthy doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste good – and most importantly, doesn’t mean it can’t be the hit of the party!  Two different classes have been scheduled at the Seretean Wellness Center Demonstration Kitchen.  Each class is independent of the other and enrollment in both classes is not required.

Friday, Nov. 30, noon – 1 p.m.

Wellness tip: Athlete's foot                                   
Athlete's foot is a fungus that thrives in warm moist environments. To avoid it, consider the following tips. Wash your feet thoroughly each day and be sure to dry thoroughly between your toes. Wear flip flops or sandals at a public pool or shower. Do not wear the same socks for more than one day. Wear shoes that are well ventilated.
