OSU dean supports community through United Way service

Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Stephan Wilson

One of Stephan Wilson’s passions in life is service.

While he stays very busy as the dean of the College of Human Sciences at Oklahoma State University, Wilson voluntarily chairs the Leaders Society for United Way on a simple mission to make a difference serving his community. Although Wilson has always had a passion for philanthropy, it was getting to know the people who work with the human service agencies that convinced him to get involved with the annual United Way fund drive.

“It was the logical next step,” Wilson said. “At some point, you have to be asked or invited to serve on the United Way board. I was, and it made good sense to accept.”

Wilson served as the United Way OSU campaign chair a few years ago, a position he calls “a privilege.” As the chair for the campaign, one of his goals was to reach wider audiences to promote service, giving, and a love of philanthropy throughout the community.

If you can help people to get outside themselves and focus on someone else, to give to somebody else,” Wilson said. “It makes your life feel different. It is not always about giving but what you get out of doing.”

Sheri Carter, Stillwater Area United Way executive director, said Wilson’s ideas and support have been an asset.

He has a great level of commitment to our community and has helped several of our agencies by serving on committees and chairing the OSU campaign,” Carter said. “We are lucky to have him.”

Wilsons favorite experience with United Way was serving on the allocations committee. The committee allowed him to build relationships around Stillwater and learn from new experiences. Assisting on the committee also raised his awareness of how United Way can impact those it serves.

Meaning is created through the things you do for others,” Wilson said. “Service is quite important. It is a part of becoming a cultured and educated person.”

Stillwater Area United Way supports 22 local nonprofits who help 77,000 Payne County residents annually. To learn how to get involved or to make a donation, visit stillwaterunitedway.org
