Aspiring drone pilots have a new opportunity to take their skills to the next level this summer at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City.
The university is offering a Part 107 test preparation course designed to help students earn their Federal Aviation Administration Remote Pilot Certificate.
One of the course’s instructors is Darren Hensley, owner of American Drones and a seasoned instructor who has trained more than 1,000 students with a reported 95% success rate.
“This is a test preparation class that will take you through all of the fundamentals you need to pass the Part 107 exam,” Hensley said. “We’re going to make it easier for you to understand the material, especially the more complex topics like sectional charts and airspace classifications.”
OSU-OKC offers a course Saturdays in June on campus with online content to be completed during the week. The cost for the course is $200.
The course is tailored for individuals looking to operate drones commercially. Under FAA regulations, anyone using drones for business purposes must hold a Part 107 license.
“If you want to make any money with your drone, you need to have your 107,” Hensley said. “There’s no in-between. It’s either a hobby or it’s commercial, and if it’s commercial, you need to be certified.”
Hensley said that while the material may seem overwhelming at first glance, the course is structured to build confidence and understanding. He also makes himself available to students outside of class for additional support.
“Once you have an understanding of the material and start practicing it, you’re ready to pass your 107 in no time,” he said.
The course is ideal for photographers, real estate professionals, construction surveyors and anyone interested in entering the rapidly growing drone industry. In addition to test prep, students will gain insights into airspace regulations, weather considerations and operational safety.
