Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City kicked off its Fall 2025 semester with a warm welcome for new and returning students, as faculty and staff joined in the excitement.
Enrollment is up, and so is enthusiasm, said Dr. Ronna Vanderslice, vice provost for academic affairs for the OSU System and provost for OSU-OKC.
“The increased enrollment on campus shows that students are realizing the great value of the workforce-focused education you can receive at OSU-OKC,” Vanderslice said.
Dr. Evan Burkala, vice provost for academic affairs at OSU-OKC, echoed that sentiment.
“Our workforce programs provide tremendous value and opportunity,” he said.
Luke Jackson, a student in the power transmission and distribution technology program, said he’s looking forward to “changing my lifestyle and raising my tax bracket.” He added that PTDT is a vital part of the nation’s infrastructure and he’s excited to contribute by “helping people who are in need — especially those without power.”
The university’s annual Howdy Week, running Aug. 18-21, features daily activities in the HUB on the second floor of the Student Center. Students can enjoy free coffee and donuts each morning, along with rotating lunchtime treats.
Wayne Thompson, a business management student, shared his goals for the semester during Monday’s Howdy Week event.
“Making good grades, making new friends and being active in school groups,” he said.
In addition to Howdy Week, OSU-OKC’s professional studies department hosted a “Spin the Wheel & Meet the Professors” event in the first-floor lobby of the Learning Resource Center. The event continues Tuesday. Students can meet faculty members, get help locating their classes and spin a prize wheel for OSU-OKC merchandise and treats.
Faculty members at the event expressed enthusiasm about the return of students and the energy on campus.
“It’s exciting to see the students back on campus,” said Sheryl Heaton Powers, associate professor of business administration. “Fall is a great time because of the energy the new students bring.”
English professor Teri Ferguson noted the visible signs of student activity, saying,
“It’s great to see the Student Center parking lot full.”
Tony Smith, professor of business administration, added that the excitement is mutual.
“I think the faculty are more excited than the students,” he said. “We’re thrilled to start the semester.”
The events are part of OSU-OKC’s broader effort to help students acclimate to campus life, build relationships and start the academic year on a positive note.
