Future Chefs Deliver Lunches to Tornado Victims

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

The Culinary Arts Division’s Future Chefs Association is always looking for service projects to help others. The day after deadly tornados tore through the region, the club prepared and packed more than 1,100 sack lunches for American Red Cross shelters serving victims of the storms in the Oklahoma City area.

Over 30 students, faculty and staff members participated in the community service project that also collected donations to cover the cost of the meals as well as clothes, toiletries, and canned food to be delivered by the club.

“This was such a near and dear project to all of us because we all know people from the area,” said Chef Bill Leib, FCA faculty advisor.

The FCA club conducts many community service projects throughout the year including serving food to the homeless at Open Gate in Okmulgee and supporting Chefs for the Cure at Cancer Treatment Center in Tulsa.

“We have a great group of students in the club,” said Leib. “Two of them called me hours after the storm had passed through Moore and presented the idea of preparing meals for the victims.”

“Anytime you have a chance to help others, you should,” stated Cory Spencer, FCA president. “If you don’t have money you can always donate your time.”
