OSUIT's Veterans Day Celebration Scheduled
Wednesday, November 4, 2015
On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the OSU Institute of Technology campus will honor veterans and active military with a flag ceremony, Bronze Star presentation and reception as part of the university’s Veterans Day celebration.
OSUIT’s history begins with the armed forces. Before it was a school, the campus served as a military hospital for those who fought in World War II. In 1946, Oklahoma State University took over the property and turned the facility into a technical and vocational school for veterans so they could re-enter the workforce.
And that mission continues today.
The applied technology environment at OSUIT is a perfect fit for many veterans who enjoy hands-on learning and hands-on work.
“It’s important for the students and staff to recognize and honor all past and present veterans and their families as part of our university’s heritage and culture,” said Chenoa Worthington, assistant registrar. “Our veterans have stood guard, pursued our enemies and braved danger to protect our freedom. They have given their lives to our country to protect, not only their families, but each and every one of our families.”
The Veterans Day celebration begins at 11 a.m., on Wednesday Nov. 11 in Covelle Hall with a flag presentation and veteran recognition.
Congressman Markwayne Mullin will be on hand to present the Bronze Medal to Okmulgee resident 1st Sgt. Amos Starr, who retired from the U.S. Army in 1993 after serving for 26 years.
Thessaly Grant Griffin Sr., will serve as the guest speaker at OSUIT’s ceremony with a reception immediately following the program.
All veterans are invited to attend and participate in OSUIT’s Veterans Day event.
“We have many veterans, including students, staff and members of the community that look forward to participating each year,” Worthington said.
