Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology is partnering with the Electrical Training Alliance of Western Oklahoma to establish a transfer agreement which enables electrical apprentices to earn college credit toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Applied Technology.
Under the agreement, students who complete the Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Training Program (Years 1-4) are eligible to receive up to 42 technical credit hours toward the AAS degree. In addition, students will complete 18 credit hours of general education coursework at OSUIT, which may be taken concurrently with their apprenticeship training.
"It is gratifying to see hardworking Oklahomans fulfill their personal and career goals, especially through a partnership between OSUIT and the local IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) unions,” said Curtis Chambers, executive director of the Oklahoma Building & Construction Trades Council. "Investing in our union members, Oklahoman citizens, is part of the mission of OKBCTC, and now continuing that investment by partnering with an in-state institution completely aligns with the council's values."
The agreement applies retroactively to students who began their apprenticeship in Fall 2021 and also includes graduates prior to that date who hold an unlimited journeyman license issued by the State of Oklahoma.
“By working in concert with IBEW to provide a degree pathway for their apprentices, we're looking out for the future of Oklahoma's workforce and providing avenues into leadership positions and personal growth, further ensuring opportunity and access to younger generations, adult learners and those looking to reskill themselves,” said Brandon Dinsmore, workforce program specialist with OSUIT Workforce and Economic Development.
The agreement, which became effective June 1, 2025, will remain in place for five years with options for renewal. For more information about the AAS in Applied Technology program and how to apply, visit the website.
