Building a Legacy in Collegiate Esports
OSU Institute of Technology’s Gaming & Entertainment Organization (GEO) has launched its first competitive Valorant team, competing in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC). The team aims to finish at the top of their division and secure a postseason spot.
Currently ranked sixth in Division 8, the team holds a 2-1 record with several matches remaining. Team captain Ali Medford views the season as a learning experience.
"This season has been an incredible lesson in what we need to improve on while still having fun with it," Medford said. "I’d like to think we’ve grown — not just as players, but as people — since the team was created."
The team holds regular practices focusing on skill drills, scenario-based gameplay, and reviewing matches to refine their strategy. Medford emphasizes the importance of post-game analysis.
"After every game — even when we win — we step back and break down our gameplay," Medford said. "We look at what worked, what didn’t, and what we can do better as a team."
Finding their rhythm under pressure has been a challenge.
"In Valorant, teamwork and quick thinking are everything," Medford said. "If we lose our rhythm, we lose our teamwork. Adapting to different playstyles has also been a big learning curve."
Despite this, the team remains focused.
"My goal is to win, of course, but also to improve along the way," Medford said. "If we pull off a close win against a big team, that’s a huge accomplishment."
Esports coach and GEO advisor Jared Turnham sees is optimistic about the future.
"My goal is to make OSUIT esports a household name, and building these competitive teams is the first step in that direction," Turnham said.
The campus community is encouraged to support the team throughout the season. Students can watch the matches in the OSUIT Esports Arena, where games are displayed on the big screen, creating an exciting atmosphere.
Looking ahead, the program could expand with potential teams for League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. Students interested in joining can reach out to Jared Turnham to learn more about upcoming opportunities.
The Valorant team’s remaining competitions are 8 p.m. March 3, March 10 and March 17.
