Student Union

Students in the Oklahoma State University art department are sharing their artwork with the community in an exhibition titled “Ideas as Objects.” The work is featured in the Student Union Gallery in the basement through Friday, Feb. 5.

The exhibit features sculptural pieces from undergraduate OSU students. The sculptures are strategically comprised of a bird nest, bicycle tires, sculpted metal and various found objects.

Incorporating art into the Student Union has become a priority since the building renovation was completed in 2012.  The Student Union is a strong supporter of artistic innovation on campus and is thrilled to partner with the university’s Department of Art in introducing more art into the facility.

“The work is very engaging, and the students who pass through the Student Union are going to want to stop and look,” Brandon Mitts, Arts, Culture and Entertainment manager, said. “It is exciting to feature sculpture in the gallery for the first time.”

Department of Art faculty members, Sallie McCorckle and Adam Mulder, worked with the students as they created their inspired artwork. “As an object maker/sculptor, I enjoy seeing students realize that they are capable of creating something that ‘speaks’ in a manner that is different from the use of words," McCorckle said.

To conclude the art exhibition, a closing reception will be held on Friday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. in the basement of the Student Union. The public is welcome to enjoy refreshments and interact with the student artists. Participating student artists include: Matt Coleman, Anthony Corraro, Jinny Enkey, Catelyn Jeffrey, Blair Johnson, Demetrius Franklin, Cameron Richardson, Emma Shore, Renee Hermann and Gina McGee.

The Arts, Culture and Entertainment office is responsible for the coordination and production of many popular campus events such as the Allied Arts performance series, Fanfare of Lights, the Miss OSU Pageant and a variety of high-caliber professional speakers and performers.
