Trombone Studio Students Excel in National and International Competitions

Several OSU Trombone Studio members received special recognition during the spring 2016 semester.  John Parker, junior trombone performance major from Duncanville, Texas, won First Place at the 2016 National Tenor Trombone Solo Competition.  The competition took place at the American Trombone Workshop held at Fort Myer, home of the United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”.  

Dorien Tate, junior bass trombone performance major from Garland, Texas, won First Place at the 2016 Big 12/Bach Bass Trombone Solo Competition.  The competition took place at the Big 12 Area Trombone Conference held at the Texas Tech University School of Music.  

The OSU Jazz Trombone Ensemble placed third in the 2016 International Trombone Association Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition behind groups from Juilliard and Eastman. The members of the OSU Jazz Trombone Ensemble are Bryan Lucas (senior from Ponca City), Bruce Haiduk (senior from Broken Arrow), Jacob Eyler (sophomore from Saginaw, Texas) Andrew Peal (senior from Mansfield, Texas), Dorien Tate (junior from Garland, Texas) and Eric Kalbfleisch (senior from Carrollton, Texas). 

Tate won the $2,000 First Prize at the 2016 Chamber Music Tulsa Robert Heckman Memorial Instrumental Competition.  Parker won the $500 Second Prize at this same competition.

Tate also won the $600 First Prize at the 2016 Ladies Music Club of Oklahoma City Brass Competition.  Parker won the $450 Second Prize at this same competition.  Freshman trombone performance major from Wylie, Texas, Kyle Hunt, won the $200 Second Alternate Prize, freshman music education major from Norman, OK, Andrew Meiller, won the $150 Third Alternate Prize and sophomore music education major from Saginaw, TX, Eyler, won the $100 Fourth Alternate Prize.  

Haiduk, Parker and Tate were all accepted for the 2016 Eastern Music Festival.  

Haiduk was also accepted into the graduate performance program, with scholarship, at the Boston University School of Music.

Senior music education major from Owasso, Gustave Wilde, was accepted into the graduate performance program, with full scholarship, at the Lynn Conservatory.  

Senior music education major from Mansfield, Texas, Andrew Peal, was accepted into the graduate jazz performance program, with scholarship, at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.
