Dr. Cowles Named Distinguished Alumnus

Reynolds Cowles, DVM, was recently named a 2018 Distinguished Alumnus by the Alumni Society of Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. Cowles earned his DVM degree from Oklahoma State in 1967.

Since graduation, Dr. Cowles has been serving Albemarle County in Virginia. He founded Blue Ridge Equine Clinic located in Free Union where he is involved in the day to day activities, providing clinic services and farm calls to clients. His focus is on lameness in performance and racing horses.

For more than 45 years, Cowles has been deeply involved in Virginia’s horse industry and in organized veterinary medicine serving in many capacities. He is the immediate past-president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and an AAEP board member. He has also served on the Advisory Board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the Advisory Committee for the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center. Cowles is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (which awarded him the 2009 Distinguished Veterinarian Award), and the Virginia Association of Equine Practitioners. He is a past-president of the Virginia Thoroughbred Association. Cowles currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Steeplechase Association and is chair of their Safety Committee.

Dr. Cowles will be honored at the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon hosted by OSU’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences on Friday, Oct. 12, at 11:30 a.m. in Room 101 at the Wes Watkins Center located on the OSU Stillwater campus. Tickets are $36 each and may be purchased through the Center’s alumni affairs office at 405-744-5630.
