Phi Zeta Day: Recognizing Excellence

Every day extraordinary research studies happen at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences and challenging clinical cases are solved. Each year, the Nu Chapter of The Society of Phi Zeta hosts Phi Zeta Day to recognize these individuals and their work. This year 35 veterinary students, interns, residents, graduate students and post-doctoral associates presented their work vying for cash awards.

Congratulations to the top presenters in each category:

Intern Clinical Cases:

  • 1st place – Eva Kao, DVM, for “Femoral Fracture with Concurrent Pyogranulomatous Sialoadenitis in a 5-year-old Brittany Spaniel Mixed Breed Dog”
  • 2nd place – Kailey Anderson, DVM, for “Distraction Osteogenesis for Correction of Scissor Beak in a Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus)”
  • 3rd place – Molly Landeen, DVM, for “Suspected Hypoparathyroidism Subsequent to Severe Tracheal Trauma Surgically Corrected with Tracheal Resection and Anastomosis in an 8-year-old Boxer”
  • Honorable Mention – Sarah Schock, DVM, for “Disseminated Blastomycosis Infection in a 9-month-old Rottweiler”

Veterinary Student Clinical Cases:

  • 1st place – Emma Rupert, class of 2018, for “A Rare Primary Bone Tumor Found in a Mastiff”
  • 2nd place – Lauren Kuzimski, class of 2018, for “Atypical Addison’s Disease with Concurrent Cholangiohepatitis”

Resident Clinical Cases:

  • 1st place – Rebecca Tims, DVM, for “Recurrent Ascites Secondary to Caval Stenosis in a Pug”
  • 2nd place – Maggie McCourt, DVM, for “Clinicopathologic and Cytologic Features of a Dog with Heterobilharzia americana”
  • 3rd place – Jillian Paegelow, DVM, for “Intravenous Ganciclovir Reduced Equine Herpesvirus-5 Viral Load in a Horse with Equine Multinodular Pulmonary Fibrosis”
  • Honorable Mention – Rory Chien, DVM, for “Sterile Pyogranulomatous Steatitis and Spinal Cord Pachymeningitis with Focal Myelomalacia in a Postpartum Cow”
  • Honorable Mention – Kristen Clark, DVM, for “Clinical Presentation of Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) in U.S. Border Collie Puppy”

Established in honor of the late Dr. John King, a member of the veterinary center’s class of 1955, the John King Award recognizes the most outstanding presentation by an Oklahoma State University veterinary student.
