OSU veterinary surgeons win competition

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons announced the winners of their 2019 video competition highlighting veterinary specialty surgery successes. Winning 1st place in the competition is Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences’ Dr. Erik Clary, a board certified small animal surgeon, and Dr. Cara Blake, a board certified small animal surgeon and certified canine rehabilitation therapist. Their entry showcased the care provided at OSU’s Veterinary Medical Hospital for Milo, a puppy born with upside-down paws who became an international sensation this past January as his story spread rapidly through the mainstream media and internet.

Clary diagnosed Milo with congenital dislocation of both elbow joints. He and his team performed surgery to correct the problem, placing pins in each elbow to keep the bones aligned as the puppy continued to grow. Milo was placed in a rigid front-body splint to protect the repair. A couple of weeks later, the pins and splint were removed and Milo began intensive rehabilitation therapy with Dr. Blake and her team. That care has continued at home with Milo’s owner and family veterinarian taking the lead. The results have been remarkable as Milo now swims, runs, and plays hard like any other puppy his age.

On winning the video competition, Dr. Clary is grateful, “We thank the ACVS for its consideration and for yet another venue to tell the important story that there is hope for puppies like Milo.”
