Dr. Carlos Risco, dean of Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, recently led a two-day trip to New York City to solidify the center’s One Health and international exchange programs. Accompanying Risco were Drs. Jerry Malayer, associate dean of research and graduate education, and Ashish Ranjan, associate professor of physiological sciences.
“On day one, we met with Dr. Chandan Guha, professor and vice-chair of radiation oncology and director of the Institute for Onco-Physics from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, to explore collaborative research opportunities in the areas of translational research and faculty-initiated institutional startups,” explained Risco.
Dean Risco has now tasked Drs. Malayer, Martin Furr, physiological sciences department head, and Ranjan to identify specific programs at the veterinary center that can be tailored to strategically develop collaborations with medical institutions of repute across the country. Additional work is underway to develop a platform that can support faculty-initiated clinical trials in the veterinary college.
“On day two, we visited with several delegates from the state of Tamil Nadu, India, including the chief minister (equivalent to a governor) and the minister of milk and dairy development, to discuss progress with the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the veterinary center and Tamil Nadu veterinary and animal sciences university (TANUVAS),” continued Risco. “As part of the MOU, six OSU veterinary students and two faculty members traveled to TANUVAS India this summer to gain training in small, large and exotic medicines. We will host veterinary students from India for an 8-week externship this fall. In addition, we identified new collaborative research and training opportunities in animal husbandry and management practices for further discussions.”
Drs. Risco, Malayer and a few OSU subject matter specialists plan to visit India in the near future to expand the short- and long-term international strategic missions of the OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences.
