Leaving a Legacy: SMSC senior shares experiences of being a Black journalist at OSU

When sports media major Steve Spears came to OSU as a sophomore, it was only three weeks before he was on camera. “It didn’t go great,” Spears said with a laugh. Luckily he’s had many more opportunities to not only hone his craft, but also help future and incoming journalists along the way: for two years, Spears has been president of OSU’s National Association of Black Journalists, building a community and creating opportunities for his fellow media majors.

CAS Faculty Spotlight: OSU’s Nordic and Finnish history expert

Dr. Jason Lavery, an Oklahoma State University Department of History Regents Professor, is also a permanent adjunct professor at Helsinki University. Since 1992, he has taught a summer course, "Finland Pre-History to the Present," at Helsinki Summer University, which helps students and immigrants understand Finnish culture.

Exhibition featuring 49 national and international artists opens Jan. 13 at Gardiner Gallery

On Monday, Jan. 13, “24 Hours of Wonder” — an exhibition of works by 49 artists — will open at Oklahoma State University’s Gardiner Gallery of Art. The traveling show centers on poetry, music and 2D, 3D and digital art that depicts what contributing artists consider moments of wonder. The project began in 2022 when founders Leticia Bajuyo and Sabine Senft sent chain letter-like invitations to artists worldwide. The result was an initial 24 artworks, one for each hour of the day.

A Guitar, A Heritage, A Legacy: OSU history professor publishes book, co-curates Bob Dylan Center exhibition about Jesse Ed Davis

After years of research, writing and collaboration, Oklahoma State University Department of History professor Douglas Miller finally saw the fruits of his labor unveiled this fall with the publication of his latest book, “Washita Love Child: The Rise of Indigenous Rock Star Jesse Ed Davis” and the opening of the “Jesse Ed Davis: Natural Anthem” exhibition at The Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa. Both Miller’s book and his exhibition — which he co-curated with U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo — celebrate guitarist Jesse Ed Davis, an Oklahoma native and Indigenous musician whose work shaped the sound of a generation.

OSU Army ROTC cadets receive assignments at December branch ceremony

On Dec. 5, graduating Oklahoma State University Army ROTC cadets received their assignments during the Cowboy Battalion Branch Ceremony on the OSU-Stillwater campus. All of this fall’s cadets who competed for active duty received their first branch choice according to Lieutenant Colonel Kyle Ferguson — something no other Oklahoma university achieved.

CAS students Elyse Cronic, Megan Roach, Kalen Strunk and Ferguson College of Agriculture student Elizabeth Struble attended GCURS, a prestigious undergraduate research conference that provides students around the world with opportunities to present their original research to a peer audience.

Art history and studio art major named December 2024 CAS Orange Gown Graduate

The College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Committee has selected Paige Nguyen as the CAS Orange Gown Graduate for Oklahoma State University’s Fall 2024 undergraduate commencement ceremony. An art history and studio art double major, Nguyen received the Orange Gown honor for her outstanding achievements and exemplary contributions to the OSU community over the past four years. As the Orange Gown Graduate, she will wear the orange cap and gown as well as lead faculty and students into the commencement ceremony while carrying the college’s banner.
